Yes, you have to cut the panel. It is cut at the point where the rear cabin panel will be located. I would maybe make a battery box and put it under the tray, on the right hand side, opposite the fuel tank. Dont have it in the cabin, or it will have to be a sealed box, vented to outside. Sounds like a pain, just put it in the back.... 8-)

You cant see sh!t from underneath, there is a floor in the way.
Just lift the floor panel out and have a look, there's heaps of room. Some people put spare wheels in there!
My ute is same same. Just driving and enjoying it. The alternator died last month, but I had a couple of spares, so easy fixed.
I won't be doing much to the ute now for a while, gotta finish the EF wagon next.

Was relocating the battery a big/difficult job Ash? How do the leads terminate in the engine bay?

OK, not much of an update, as I havent really done much to the ute lately, except replace the rear window.
I was loading up on Saturday for a run to the tip, and I had a 4" square fence post to put on top of the rest of the green waste, to squish it down a bit. As I threw it into the ute, I kind of slipped a bit, and threw it too high, and it hit the bottom edge of the back window and exploded it. FVCK! s**t! BUGGER! etc, etc.
I rang my step dad, to see if we had another rear window on the farm, but the only one we had was in the donor XH, and while I could have used it, it would have to be replaced. He rang around and found a mate with an XF ute wreck that I could have the rear window out of for free. Cool, plus it was on the way to the farm, so I called in on Sunday morning, cut the rubber (it was very old and hard) and I had a new rear window in about 10 minutes. I sat in on some old lounge cushions for the rest of the trip, and got it out to Beaudesert with no troubles.
My step dad and I were both sure that the rear window surround on the XH's was bolted on thru the rear panels, so I removed the roof lining, upper seat belt mounts, plastic panels, etc, and then we found that the rear panel is just clipped on. Oh well, you learn something every day.
After removing the rest of the glass, and the urethane holding it to the cab, we cleaned the new window, and used a roll of the 10mm windscreen mounting stuff, with the correct primer, etc. (We had this left from another job from a few months ago) When we went to fit the window we realised the new glass was smalller than the old one. It still fits and seals, but is obviously smaller, and will need to be replaced.
Oh well, another useful piece of info for the Fordmods universe, and I will have to see what Ford or the windscreen mob across the road from work want for a new rear screen. I will post some pics of the damage soon.
Cheers, 8-)

So it turns out that Ford changed the rear screen mounting design mid-95, half way thru the XG's, to the glued in design. Why they decided to do this I will never understand, probably to standardize the way all the windows are fitted.
So I need a rear screen out of a mid-95 on XG, or an XH, but it must have been glued in, not rubber mounted. I spoke to my local Ford spares dept, and can get one new for $200.00, but I'm hoping to find something a bit cheaper. Fingers crossed.
Cheers,
8-)

I take it you mean the plastic panel around the back of the cab? It has no seal, the plastic panel is just clipped on, and the cabin itself is fully sealed, so moisture cant get in. Mine had a fair bit of dust inside it, and I suppose if it got really dirty, and then really wet, the moisture may be trapped inside and start rusting the cabin, but mine was clean and dry.

Still looking for a new rear window, if anyone has one laying around

I contacted Ford for a new rear window, and even at trade price it was over $200. :(
I tried the autoglass people across from work, and they did me a great deal, so I will have a new, heated, rear window for less than $100. By the time I get the urethane, etc, it will probably be all done for about $125.00, so I'm happy with that.
Now I just need to remove the (wrong) rear window, fit the new one, and wire up the rear demister, and all will be good. And better than it was before I fvcked it up. 8-)

Does the XH use the same demister switch as EF, or XF, or ???.

Same as EF/EL. The correct urethane to use is Sikaflex 255 Extra.

New rear window all fitted and hunky-dory! 8-)
Attachment:
XH ute with window removed.jpg

The rear panel/cover is just clipped on, no bolts, screws, or rubber seal. Very simple to remove and refit.

Now I just have to wire up the rear demister, fit a switch, etc. I'll worry about that later.

I got some nice dark grey/black carpet for the rear panel inside the cabin, and have started to fit it. I'll get some pics, etc, once it's done. 8-)
