Hahahaha I'm building an old Win98 machine to play old DOS games etc tec, it has 96mb RAM, CD drive, network card, and a 19" screen. I have video and hard drive, though im looking at something a little more powerful than a 2mb S3 Virge and something bigger than 2gig :)

Basically im after:
10/20/40 gig hard drives
Socket 370 CPU
SD-RAM (no more than 384mb)

Also if anyone has cd's/floppies for any of the following games... :D Yes i could download them but that requires finding them and that's effort.

Quake (got Quake2)
Doom (got Doom2)
Transport Tycoon (not the deluxe version)
Any of the commander keens
Wolfenstein 3D
Any of the Duke Nukem series, including 3D
-more games to come, just gotta think of them-

Cheers,
Simon

Mitch i've just scored an AGP Voodoo Banshee, unless it's a PCI card then it's of no use to me. IF so, then it means that i will have 2 old machines that i will be able to use for some Multiplayer doom action :D hahahaahaha this is going to be so much fun when it's done :)

You should be able to find the upgrade patches for Doom/Doom 2 on the net as well. For the graphics is the Doom OpenGL patch - makes the Doom graphics really awesome. So much better detail.

Well the original Doom graphics were 320x240 pixels (very blocky as you know). The Windows 95 patch gave you a lot of customisation options, along with a 640x480 graphics option.
The openGL patch improves the rendering to make the scenes considerably more smoother, e.g. when you walk up to a wall it looks smooth and doesn't have the colour blocks.
Try this URL: http://www.avault.com/pcrl/patches_temp ... tch=gldoom

When your original post came out, you said you were running a P166. I'd recommend putting together a PII system, as the parts should be obtainable for nix, and you'd be able to get the full potential out of those older games, particularly with the later patches that came out.

Some guys have said use emulators and programs that slow the clockspeed, only problem is they don't work with all older games, and I've found at times they crash the system. Windows XP compatibility mode will do same at times.

I would run a PII IF i had a mobo that would take one, i currently only have a Socket7 mobo (P166mhz) and a socket 370 mobo (possibly the 366mhz Celeron powerhouse?) Dunno if i could trust a cpu to be transported that distance safely though? How much you want for it? Double figures lol ?

snap0964 - thanks man for the tips, If i had it available to me then i'd take it for sure but when im getting most of these parts for free i can't complain :) btw the link requires a username & password to download, and i googled it but didn't come up with any other mirrors... No matter. 320x240 should bring back plenty of memories :D
