I'll be using the winch on my tandem real soon, i'll have a look at it's specs, but i thought it was able to pull more than 1200kg. It did cost a fair bit, but it's got 2 speeds and it's not very hard to pull a car up onto the trailer with it.

Cheers

You will get a 12V boat style winch for heaps less then a grand mate.
You can get a 9000LB 4x4 winch now for $800.
A boat one will do the job your after fine. Check Supercheap or even fleabay.
I think you will be surprised at how cheap they can actually be.

That's a good question, i dunno why that has happened.

I've only ever been able to bend drop axels, not the springs!

My winch is manual for 2ton & i was using it this arvo to drag the ED onto the trailer for scrap, no diff in it, trolley jack holding the rear of the car up, front wheels rolling along the ground. Got it up onto the trailer with very little effort....

Cheers

Engine cranes don't work so well on dirt when they have weight on them, i learn't that the hard way removing an engine from a ED GLI recently. I ended up using my chain & a chain block to drag the crane across the dirt & drop the engine on the driveway (concrete). Current car i have wrecked in the driveway, made it much easier to get onto the trailer.

Your springs might have been cheap, or they might have been overloaded.

That winch looks a tad weird, what sort of cable is that?

Cheers

Can anyone tell me, how the f**k this happens?

The top leaf is so bent the opposite ends wont even stay in the sleeve. I can get one it but the others are twisted out of alignment.

I don't even know when this happened and only picked it up as I was changing the wheels over.

looks to me like the brakes work too well for the springs.
the rearwards force on the axle and wheel from braking is overpowering the spring tension
lucky u picked it up now and not later when the car u were towing falls off the trailer.
if it was left any longer the spring would have come out of the front slip mount dropped down into the road and who knows???

It makes light work of getting a car onto the trailer by youself. Even with having to crush the doors as you drag it up, (it's only 6ft wide) still not all that hard lol.

Cheers
