when sitting idling, its like 1 cyl is missing once every 2-3 complete cycle's, its kinda like.. "go go go nothing go go nothing go go go go nothing go go".. really strange.. became more noticeable after sports exhaust was fitted.. can hear the pop as it misses now, but it was always there beforehand,
ive tried advancing and retarding the timing to no avail (yes im doing it correct, Diag mode, wait 2 mins for it to stumble, almost stall, then set.) makes no difference...
with a timing light when it misses you can see the timing mark jump slightly, but that's obviously due to the miss.. but I don't know... its got me stumped.. I don't even know which Cyl it is.. because its not Constant enough to find out...
hoping anyone can suggest on what to try next.. or if they've had the same issue?
thanks very much guys, much appreciated..

Any suggestions are appreciated.. really out of ideas..

Swap out the ecu. I had a ecu that did that back in the day On my EL Fairmont. When it stumbles my ISC valve would cut in then it would do it again. Also running a normal 92degree thermostat makes these engines idle better. I had problems with idle after fitting 82degree. Wouldn't hurt cleaning the pins on the ECU and reseating the plug with a 10mm drive.

Hi mate, thanks for the reply! ill clean the pins etc tomorrow and see how it goes, i may also try a 92 degree thermostat.. see if it makes much difference..

It also does it when the ISC is disconnected, as well as connected.. so I dont think its that.. but might be worth sourcing another ecu just for sh*ts and giggles,

Willing to try anything now.. its got me stumped.. its a complete miss every 2-4 seconds.. only at idle..

Kind regards,
Tait

possible ECU fault
Block line from vapour canister while at idle
connect a timing light and watch for consistant flash - try on each plug may give idea of how many or which cylinders miss
how old is fuel ?

Thankyou
Tait

Okay, so swapped ecu's, no avail, no difference,

And swapped map sensors with no difference..

but I decided for some unknown reason to disconnect the vacuum hose from the charcoal canister to the lower half of the bbm, and found that its full of oil.. like I angle it down and oil runs out.. I assume this is blow-by? As the line connects to a vacuum Joiner in a F shape with the pcv line,

I guess the poor old girl is getting abit tired with just under 350k.. blows a little blue smoke on gear changes im told,

could excessive blow-by cause a miss at idle? Im waiting on funds to get a inline catch can for the pcv and hope it stops the blow-by going back into the donk..

If it has a miss, go back to basics. Disconnect one cylinder at a time, either by the ignition lead or the fuel injector. Try and isolate which cylinder is playing up.

Have you checked the condition of your Spark plugs. they may have oil on them as well, considering you state you have some blow by.

Brett

Its all fine, new, and its not a constant miss so hard to find which cyl it is,

its at idle and only misses once every 2-3 complete cycles, read the whole thread please :)

Kind regards,
Tait
