My mate's mum owns a 1984 XE Fairmont Ghia fitted with an old Sony Radio/CD/Tape system with an amplifier in the boot.
The radio reception on AM is fine, but when you go to the FM band, the static is really bad. No matter how far the antenna is up, or down, the static is still there - how can it be fixed?

is it only when the car is running?
if so, the static is caused by the alternator. fit a suppressor on it and that will most likely solve your problem. i had a cheapie aerial on one of my cars and i never got good clear sound out of it.

Yes, only whilst it is running. How much does a surpressor cost for this kind of car?

$10 would cover it.
even just a multi-purpose type would be fine. they hook up between negative and positive. if you find it's still doing it, there is also one on the coil you can fit.
