The two main plug shapes are the same, but Ford changed the pinouts all around, and added the extra plug you have for the Door Ajar setup.

Check the Cluster Upgrade doco in the Tech doc section for more info.

I found this out the hard way when I went to plug in my adapter loom I built for my EB Fairmont loom, into the EB Fairmont Ghia loom that had the Digi Cluster. Very different. I had to completely rebuild the adaptor to suit.

This really s**t me off, nice sunny day, got out there to do the T5, but problems arise!

Bellhousing bolts up to the block fine, and cross member bolts up to the set of holes fine, but the gear shifter is out by about 5cm from the hole and the sandwich plate doesn't line up, what is going on here?

Isn't this box from an AU? If so the box will be longer than an eseries one, hence the shifter not lining up correctly.

As for the sandwhich plate, is it in the right spot. It looks like it should rotate down and then fit.

But if not, I would suspect that you may need an AU sandwhich plate.

s**t, i thought they were the same? I was under the impression the T5's were the same, apart from the input shaft? So whats actually longer, the box itself or the housing?

I believe the rear extension and therefore the output shaft and shifter mech.

OK. Now pay attention. Like me, you have just learned the hard way to NEVER assume Ford bits from another model are the same or similar. NEVER.

I always Triple check. And even then I get caught out sometimes.

Yeah i sure am mate, i always do haha even when i check. The most annoying part is it's only out by about 5cm as you can see in the pic. Looks like i'll have to use a new sandwich plate, then cut a hole in the tunnel for the shifter. Bugger, bugger, bugger

At a guess, I would say it would be too long.

You could try a sedan drive shaft as they are shorter. I would also check your yoke will fit in the end of the box.

Yea, i got the yoke with the box, have fitted it onto the shaft, so will test to see if it's too long. If it's too long, this is going up for sale.

Bugger! That sucks mate, hope you can sort something out. I have been watching this transformation very closely as I too have considered the manual conversion, but I think I will just stick with the auto cruiser because when problems like this come up with me, my short temper means things get broken
Good luck with getting it all sorted

Yeah cheers mate, real pain in the a*** this is being, If the sedan shaft fit's, i'm fine as i can just cut a hole in the tunnel for the shifter and then invert the shifter stick as it can be mounted either way, facing forward or back. Best option would be to get another tail shaft with output shaft and final gear etc etc, but i think that would start to get messy. Felt like booting the f**k thing, but i know from experience that doesn't help lol. Could sell the box but there are no E series boxes anywhere for me to buy, the guy that sold me it must have known, too bad he shafted me on the flywheel too, was meant to get a new billet wheel, but only got used standard. My advice for you mate, stick with what you have lol

Right, here is what the plan is, i need to get an AU V8 sandwich plate, and i have a sedan steel driveshaft sitting here that i can use in the mean time until i find an alloy one. Then i will need to cut a 10cm slice in the tunnel so i can fit the shifter in, then i need to invert the shifter stick (it just bolts on around the other way) so hopefully, it will still sit where it should in the console. Anybody else got any ideas? I'm open to swapping them this for an E series T5 lol

Bloody stoked, got off my a** and went out to the car and had a looksie, i put the console in place to see how it would pan out, actually sits better WITH the AU gearbox! see pics, basically by the box being 5-10cm back, it puts the shift stick in the correct position for the gearboot. ripper!, now i have to cut the hole and fill in the gap to make it look stock.
as you can see by the pictures. Boring to some people but makes me feel better!

Brilliant.

I knew you could work it out. Well done.

So the sedan tailshaft fits in fine? You can get alloy versions. The XR sedans had an alloy one from factory.
