is it auto or manual what head do you have at the moment how much you plan on spending ? do you have extractors and exhaust at moment CAI? i'd be going with a reco bottom end with a acl race series rebuild extractors and 2.5" mandrel exhaust with a ported head and reground cam and a j3 chip and tune you may be looking at $2500 area if all your stuff is good before the rebuild as for gears go 3.45 or 3.89

milo yeh i know what your meaning i already have an ea manual so first few gears are nice and short and im also looking into a 3.7 lsd

ed xr6 man she sounds pretty schmik dude

micky yeh ive been talking to the mechanic about this exact problem
i know every 10 thou off the block is supposed to get you 8 rwkw or somthing
but how much difference would it make to take 20 thou off the head and leave the block? as ive been told there close to zero piston height already?

i dunno the clearence and how much you could take of the head before you'd have problems with valve and piston clearence? also them you have timing issues cos youve bumped up the comp from standard 10 tho wouldnt bump the comp up that much would it?

How did you find out about the 8kw per 10 thou off the head?
Doesnt sound right at all, 40 thou shave for 40 hp?
You should only really plan to face the head or block if it needs resurfacing to get a good gasket seal.
Shaving stuff to bump up compression isnt always the right way, just the cheap way.
Working out compression ratios is a science in itself and shouldnt be taken lightly or on heresay.

yeh i know and the standard pistons are fly cut because of clearence issues but i think this is for incase something goes majorly wrong like a timing chain break

and apparently 10 thou on the block does have a pretty big effect

Hard to say dude but there is a guy on here who rebuilt his engine and took like 40thou off the head then another 20 thou off the block and had timing chain issues, so definatly not worth it.

Like i said just take 10thou off head and block and make is flat and square and using a high comp piston like ACL race series http://www.aclperformance.com.au/Ford4. ... istons.htm

U will be in the mid 10.5 comp which is great and wouldnt want any more than that and i believe hypatec make a similar comp piston as apparently ACL dont make the above piston anymore

Like Mickyyyy suggested, don't take that much off the head. If you want high compression, run high comp pistons. Shaving the head will bump up compression but only by a small amount. Taking too much off the head and block will see you have issues with the timing chain being slack.

Shave the head a few thou, use an AU MLS headgasket and let a set of high comp pistons bump up the compression for you. Has the block been decked already?? You said that there is close to zero piston height already..
