You hear different opinions about this every now and again, so now I want my fellow memeber's input.

I'm trying to save petrol, which means driving like a grandma and any other little tricks to save petrol. I usually drive all windows up, air con on auto (which in this hot weather is full power generally). If I drove around, all windows down and air con off, will I see a difference in fuel economy?

Thanking ye all.

Grandma driving as in a very very light foot. Low revs, rolling start, etc., lol.

not much of a difference, but it will be there.. this was on mythbusters about 6 months ago. very interesting...

they drove car around oval race track one session with windows up and air con on, then one session with air con off and windows down. i think they were travelling at around 65-70 MPH something like that. There was stuff all diff, from memory i think the air con on and windows up just won. but this was tested at highway speeds, and not stop starting.

i have avoided the question by rambling....lol

You will use less fuel in city traffic, start stop, but not a huge difference. that is what i have heard anyway.

correct me if i am wrong.

This is only what ive been told so i dunno how much credence to put in it...

But i was told that up to 80km/hr, its better to have the windows down and the aircon off. Above 80km/hr, the extra drag from the windows down will consume more fuel than having the air con compressor engaged...

one arguement is if you turn the A/C on you will have a power sapping air cond pump on the engine thus using more fuel - the flip side is that by driving with the windows down (and A/C off) you ruin the cars aerodynamic streamline thus using more fuel.

I doubt you will notice much!

Keep the car serviced.
Keep the tyre pressures up.

yep, make sure your car is clean & boot is empty of s**t you don't need (save weight) make sure your tyres are pumped up nice and tight and do the slow stops and rolling starts etc. That is pretty much all you can do!

Hmmm, well the first two I can do, but not keen on the third.

O, and with tyre pressure, how many notches over the recommended full load can I go?
