have u got a aftermarket audio system or have u made adjustments to it. if yes, turn your radio "off" does it still whine, if no its a audio set up whine

this happens usually when power wires are placed next to audio leads, couple ways of getting round it.
1. re-run the wires and use good shielded wires for audio.
2. turn your volume up higher to drown it out.
3. pretend its a turbo spooling

Check your earths. Incorrect earths could cause the whine even in a stock sound system.
Is it coming from the speakers?

Might be a gearbox whine then. Cant be sure
Check your belt
The injectors make a ticking sound usually, could be them malfunctioning?
Starter motor?
Its kind of like stabbing in the dark with these sorts of things. Go out and try and find where the sound is coming from and that might help you find the are to be looking at...

Cheers

Sam

Check all your pulleys and make sure they are clean.
Check the harmonic balancer for grime and muck.
How does the belt look?
Could be something powered by the pulley eg: air con, water pump, alternator (<--this is what i would be checking the most), power steering.

the whine is coming from the power steering pump. Does it need to be fixed/replaced etc.
