check all the wires in and around the back of the ignition switch and leading down to where the switch plugs into the main loom.
my ED had a problem exactly like that. just be driving down the road and would cut out as if you turned it off. all lights and that would be on though. found a dodgy connection in the power wire where the switch harness joins the main loom. zip tied the connecter tight together and havent had a problem since, that was about 2 years ago.

Gotta love the scan-tool eh?  yeh we've got a coilpack there, not sure if it's au or ef though. and yeh, the scan tool is awesome, it saves alot of time and stuffing around. leroy - i will have a look if i can, it's done it mostly since i've had the pedal box out, but there was 1 time before that when it did cut out, so maybe a plug isn't plugged in right.

have you owned the car since new? if not someone could have done a manual conversion and not replaced something correctly? just a guess!!! anyone know if this may be a reason?

it's a factory manual.
it also hasn't missed a beat, and usually dosen't for a while.

My EL Futura used to do this, would just turn itself off, then start up again by itself while doing 80km/h.
only did it about 4 times, last time was around 4 months ago, and i havent touched anything or replaced anything. My car is also a factory manual so it may be a common problem.
