hi
the engine in my ea is starting to get a knock..
my question is which engine would be best.
the ed or ef engine or the au engine??

ok the engine will be using the ea mpfi log style manifold it already has extractors .
but im also curious about the accesories can i use the ea aircon pump, power steer pump and alternator. or should i just go with the serpentine belt set up? and again will the ea aircon pump still fit?

Ive Seen EF/EL engines running the log style manifold etc, but out of all of them id assume it would be easy just to put in the ED engine.

if you want to get out of it cheap and easy ED would be the go, specially if yours is already mpfi.
should basically be a straight swap.

Au engine. Newer. Easy as the other motors to fit (just drop in a dizzy) better head gasket, better bottom end. Just better all round.

there is a couple of engines on ebay but there in melb im in sydney.
so there is no doubt i will get one in sydney..
but i still have the question?? will the air con pump and alternator from the ea fit straight on the ef engine or even just the aircon pump as i dont want to disconect it...
i hope i can get the engine out without disconnecting aircon lines???

if you use serpintine belts you WILL have to convert the aircon pump too which will involve regas. if you use ED its a traight swap and apparently the AU sump needs to be altered or swapped to a pre AU sump. as said above the dizzy will have to be put in (not coil packs) so there is a little bit to do.

my choice would be an ED motor as it can bolt straight in without no issues what so ever. the EL will require aircon regas ect and manifold swap and dizzy, EL - manifold swap, regas and possibly a few altered wires

ok
cool thanks
so is it possible to use the normal 3 belt set up on the ef engine or are the timing case covers different???

the reason why i ask is that i just got the aircon fixed (new pump +regas) and dont want to loose the gas and get another pump..

otherwise i guess i will just go with the ed engine..

you can run an au motor with the ea manifold. but you will need an ef p/s pump ef a/c and bracket and a ef tensioner. i know this because i have done it before. the only thing you have to do is make the holes in the tensioner a couple of mm bigger so you rotate the tensioner clockwise slightly. this makes the belt mugh easier to go on. just anothe option if you dont want to put in a different computer.

unless you want to rebuild the motor with a EA-ED crank... serpintine belts are alot thinker and is one belt. the easiest by far is the ED, and just unbolt the aircon pump from the block and leave it in the bay

oh well
ill try to get a ed engine first . there is no real point in rebuilding my engine as its only a 3.9 multipoint with a bearing knock and its leaking coolent from the side of the head...
but i must say for a 3.9 it has run a 15.6 1/4 . before it started to knock.

any advice or options would help ...

thanks....
