Does anybody know if EL mounts will fit an EF?
I ordered some from my mechanic and he dropped them off yesterday but they aren't hydraulic and are squarer than the EF ones. The strange thing is they both have EF-EL printed on them. Do they work with an adapter or something? I assume the proper ones are still available? (which I'd prefer as they should be smoother)

simple answer:- they bolt straight in on with no problems. I switched from ef ones to the EL ones when my engine got rebuilt.

These don't look right anyway. They should be round with verticle threads on each side wheras these have one side going off at a 45 degree angle. I wouldn't have thought there would be much change up to the AU series. He's taken them back anyway.

You need to fit the matching support bracket (the part that bolts to the subframe), along with the engine mount. The brackets fitted to the engine block don't need to be changed. From memory the exhaust side one has a plastic heat shield fitted also.
My XH has hydraulic mounts, and my EL has the rubber ones - to be honest, I can't really say if one is better than the other. Both have the same type of engine, but they aren't exactly the same car. Maybe someone who's experimented with them may have a more accurate comparison.

rubber ones won't be as smooth as the hydraulic ones, I doubt you'd really notice the difference though....

Yes but they are like $260 each from Ford - stuff that. I can get the solid mounts with brackets for $70 each. I'm sure it won't make too much difference - although I did have an new AU wagon with solid mounts few years back as a company car and it was nowhere near as smooth as the EF.

The hydraulic ones end up buggerin up internally, and then the engine feels like its bolted in solidly.
If I remember the EL low models had the rubber ones, and the higher ones, ( fairlane & ghia's ) had the hydraulic ones.

This is what I was about to enquire about. I'd like to change my EF Fairmont ones over to something a lot smoother. So in summary, which is the best to go into the EF Fairmont?

the round ones are the hydrolic ,, they are suppose to be better at dampaning engine vibrations,,but its much of a muchness,, 6 of one half a dozen of another..

I bought myself an EF Fairmont last year and it is sensational but the engine vibration at idle is very bad.
I've been told that the EF model had experimental hydraulic mounts in some vehicles, but they went back to the old kind on later models because of unreliability. I checked at President Ford and they told me that they've sold lots of hydraulic mounts and almost no rubber mounts. Here's the catch. The old square rubber kind cost about $70 from Repco. The round hydraulic kind cost about $280 from Ford. Go figure!! You do need to get a different mounting for the vehicle side, but you can get these from a wrecker for next to nothing (I'm told). Does anyone have an opinion on how easy it would be to do the conversion in my driveway? Admiral Duck
