my EF has done a head gasket(again!). Has anyone used a genuine au head gasket as a replacement on an EF-EL, and if so is there anything to be aware of. I want to use the au gasket due to it being metal, this was the main thing that stopped au's having the same problem.

if you go to repco and ask for a head gasket for EF they'll supply you with the same one as an AU one - the listings have been changed to list the AU head gasket as the EF/EL (probably early models aswell) one aswell.

only problem is, non-genuine head sets are all the same, but they are all the "paper" ones. a genuine head gasket for an AU is metal

Yes, I've used an AU head gasket in my EF,
I purchased it from JMM for i think $100 (maybe less) he claimed his gaskets were AU A-Spec and were from germany (i could be wrong) but he's the Ford 6cyl man I've been told, I trusted him, I installed it and have not had a problem at all.. and most likely will not (touch wood) also he explained the reason why the good old E series give up so to speak! and WOW a bee's d**k more compression! the only suggestion I have with these motors is get headers (any type)... I personally believe they help cool the head and and make your motor smile cheers

cool, thanks. I've heard jmm are top stuff. I better look into it. might look into some headers too. the current gasket has only lasted 80000km so hopefully the next one lasts longer!

Had a real hard time finding the AU three layer metal gasket at the Auto parts stores, ended up going to the local ford dealership and got the original AU gasket for $65. Didn't contain the rubber gasket for over the timing cover though, used the old one.

You are far better off throwing the rubber timing case gasket in the bin and using a good bead of selastic.

yeah, i've lost count of the amount of falcon head gaskets i've done (worked at a ford dealer 7 years), the front gasket is useless.

Yeah I used Loctite Superflex Black RTV Silicone along with the old gasket, followed the tips from an artical in "Performance Buildups" #15. JMM takes you through a full re-build on a ford six using the AU head gasket, good source of information.
