I'm considering buying an EF with I6 besides the usual I6 problems, heads, sticky IAS, cooling, disintegrating torque converters etc. Is there any EF specific nasties lurking that i should know about before leaping in head first? Does the EECV with its mass air flow sensor adjust to warmer cams better than EECIV setups? Were there any suspension and brake improvements over the EBII? Sorry about the long question feel free to give short answers

The ef is a good car. Mine seems a bit jinxed, its had the computer play up, and the power steering pump leak. Oh oh, the fuel pump dead as well. Which is getting fixed now.
Other than those problems with mine, I have heard that they have a tendancy to crack heads and have radiator problems. I am telling you the bad things 'case thats what you asked after.

In the 18months I have had mine, I have had the head repaired due to a crack, had the crank angle sensor replaced due to a missfire, had a new radiator, new front discs and bearings, new air con and the rear bush in the trans replaced due to leaking. I gotta say,even with all the repairs, its a bloody good car, nice and comfy, plenty of power for everyday and holiday driving and they look great too.

Inline 6 cylinders do not use the mass airflow technique. These are only employed by EB-AU V8 engines with both EEC-IV and EEC-V. An EF sill uses vacuum pressure (MAP) to measure the amount of air entering the engine. Accordingly, the EF EEC-V will have the same ability to adjust to warm cams as EEC-IV Inline 6 did/does. Quirks for the EF - may want to read up on the distributorless ignition system (i.e. coilpacks). There were a few problems with EDIS in the EF which caused ford to go back to distributors for the EL. The problem arose in the ignition part of EEC i believe.

Thanks fellas
Except for the heads cracking, bit of a worry what kind of kms do the heads go at or is it random or perhaps due to poor attention to the cooling system. I am paranoid about watching the temp guage on my EB the rest seems like normal wear Does anyone know if an EBII radiator is the same as the EF? Cheers

Heads can vary heaps; I?ve heard of some having 3-4+ gaskets done and shaved heads within the 1st 100,000 kms!
Mine sitting on 143,000 and never had any problem with a gasket or head in its life, and still looks like its holding up excellently, some are just more prone to cracks and gasket leaks than others IMHO - too many variables and situations differentiate for each car causing these things to happen at any period of its lifetime.

Cheers No matter which of the e series you buy, theres a chance of the head cracking. Ive done two heads in about ten weeks i spose it is. And thats in an EB series one. First one went at about 168000 kays, the second at 153oookays(rough estimates)

Didn't they go back to coil packs with the advent of the AU though?

Happy wrote: Didn't they go back to coil packs with the advent of the AU though? Yep. Spose they had a bit of time to stuff around with it. AU EEC-V was a fair bit different to EF EEC-V as far as i know. Sequential injection, OBD-II, all that fun stuff

Do you think that $6k is ok for an 11/94 EF with nice 17" five spokers and 235/45 bridgestones pedders springs & shocks and extractors + 2.5" system? seems pretty well maintained by the mechanic owner oh and new paint due to vandalism at pub. I'm going to see if I can get a test drive today or tomorrow. cheers

well so far ive owned an EBII an EF FAIRMONT and a EB XR6 and i have not had the head crack on any of them... as a matter of fact... i think ive had to spend close to 2 grand all up on all 3 cars for repairs over the time ive had them which i think is BLOODY excellent. thats including tune's
ef's r a good car but go with the series2 |
