Anyone got any ideas on this?

EL Fairmont-cuts out while DRIVING, happens very sproadically.
have replaced Coil pack and Ignition module.
It can happen anytime-no rhyme or reason for it, while idling at lights or driving along.
First time had to get a tow-got it home and it statrted-replaced coil and Ignition module as precaution and it worked OK for about 6 weeks.
Now when it cuts out-turn on ignition and can hear fuel pump work, crank it over and sometimes it starts, if I remove key and put back in-somtimes it starts !!
I suspect something with the ignition switch or smartlock-any Ideas??

Have you checked for a loose battery connection?

Yep-that's the first thing I checked-even have a relatively new battery-do these things have a fuel pump relay somewhere?

i did have a similar problem - i thought it was smartlock cutting in. i could be going along the highway at 80k's or sitting at the lights and it would cut out. the ECON light for the auto gearbox would light up with the smartlock light. strange when i've got the manual as to hwy the ECON light would come on.......

When mine does it-all lights come on (like when ignition turned on) but I use econ anyway so don't know if that has anthing to do with it?
Have you found the problem and resolved it?

If you earth out the top right terminal of the diagnosis connector, and turn on the ignition, the fuel pump will run. This confirms that the following are operating:
Fuel pump, fuel pump relay, ECU relay.
Undo and lift the coolant tank, and wiggle the wires of the ECU and fuel pump relays while the pump is operating, just to confirm that there aren't any loose wires. Inspect the relays themselves as well.
Wouldn't hurt to do an ECU diagnostic, just to see what comes up might give some clues.
As mentioned it looks possibly to be a smartlock or ign barrel issue.
Be on the lookout as to what the smartlock light does when the car does cut out.

Have done ECU diagnostic just after every time it dies-nothing found !!!
That's why I am thinking Ignition wiring/relay??-Thanks for the tips-I might need to spend a couple of hours going over the wiring on it !!

I cant see it being the fuel pump. Even if the pump just suddenly stoped working, or the power to it was cut, the engine will still run for 5-10 seconds. It would surge and splutter, but it will still run momentarily.

If it just instantly cuts out, I would be more looking at something ECU or ignition related. But seeing as the ignition stuff was replaced recently it is highly unlikely it is that. Still could be...

Might even be the hall effect in the dizzy is collapsing every now and then. They would be a common failure. And it would turn the ECU off and fuel pump at the same time, as its seeing no engine signal.

i think it was a smartlock wire somewhere. i had the dash and center console i pieces and must've knocked a wire somewhere back into place. not a single bit of trouble since!
