I just put the 2.5" cat back system from my ED on my EL. I was quite disappointed with it on my ED but on my EL it is awesome. Now I am wondering what to do about my cat. I rang the cops and asked them how much id be fined if I put a gutted cat on with a bit of pipe welded through it on how much id be fined IF i were caught. They said either $100 or a yellow sticker. I am considering whether or not it is worth the risk, so I am gonna use my ED cat as the one to be gutted.

Will the ED cat fit on the EL?

Will the gains be worth the risk?

Umm Dude, if the EPA get ya, its a $10K fine for a gutted cat (and Emmissions tests prove it aswell as your car potentially spitting flames), DO NOT gut the cat, just buy a highflow cat if anything

The exhaust will not spit flames without a CAT. Theres 2 ways they can test if you have a gutted CAT. 1 is emmissions (excessive CO), 2 is by using an Infrared temp gun, The CAT runs at about 450c to 600c, while a gutted cat would be 200c to 300c approx figures.

Who is the EPA and where did you hear 10K? Cos I rang the police and they said an insufficient exhaust is $100 if u r lucky or take ur car over the pits if ur unlucky

no chance of getting a shop to do it. if you have the money lying around a high flow is deffinately, and obviously the better option. gutting out your cat won't give you 10rwkw. might give it a better sound & make 3/8's difference.
risk Vs reward.

usualy you can smell a car that has had the cat removed and also has a hollow noise while under heavy acceleration.

i heard that the stock ford cats are pretty good but you might just have to modify the inlet and outlet as they are probly only 2 - 2 1/4" restricting some flow

i've heard they can flow a few hundred horsepower but cant remember where i read it.
smell depends on condition of engine.

Actually, a mate of mine punched out his cat (turbo Paseo) and his car now spits foot long flames when backing off

When you gut the cat, you can SMELL the difference. Think of what a modern car's exhaust smells like and compare that to an old leaded fueled vehicle like early falcons, kingswoods, pre 86 stuff.

It sticks out like a sore thumb, the smell is so easy to distinguish, I can pick it every time when someone has straight through'ed their cat if I get a waft of the exhaust fumes.

Many cops know about this too, for the ones that dont, I wish they did. I'm not a greenie but the amount of harm a cat-less car does far outweighs the cost of manufacture as well as fitment of a high performance cat.

i have just had pacemaker extractors and 2 and half inch exhaust fitted muffler shop welded bigger flanges onto cat converter
their thoughts that after market highflow cat was not necessary as the factory one flows well enough
hope this helps
