I had my thermostat replaced and its got googe seeping out from the top housing.
I was told it didnt need a gasket but I reckon thats s**t now. What part number do I need to get the right gasket? Its for a EF XR6. |

its a rubber gasket that wraps around the outer of the thermostat.

you dont nessicerily need a gasket ive been running mine for over a year without a gasket or silastic and hav had no troubles. but i spose if its leaking then yeah slap one on and she should cme up good

dude if its an I6 the rubber o-ring/gasket for the thing is worth like $2 genuine, and should be changed every time u have the thermostat out of the car..
part number is AU8A571A i think... just rock up at the dealership and ask them for the Thermostat O-ring and they should know what u mean... |

Also check that thermostate housing is flat...Run a file from bolt to bolt..The bolt ends of thermostate may have pulled down...
Or buy new one as well....

I have never bothered with a paper gasket, all I ever use is the rubber ring gasket and a thin smear of silastic. Never leaks.

the thermostat housing is recessed for the gasket and thermostat.

My experience has been really wierd with these covers (I refer to the whole unit that's bolted to the side of the head as the Thermostat Housing and the domed bit on top as the "Cover").
From factory I think they come just with the rubber seal with the split round it's inside so it can be put onto the thermostat "skirt" and then put in place etc. - but aftermarket top covers come with a gasket as well. I think using the rubber seal AND the gasket might be the best way to go - I need to replace my whole housing within the next week or so - and that's how I'm going to do it. I'm going to use a metal gasket to fit the new complete housing to the side of the head (I think the metal gasket is off AU?) - hope the bugger works ok - the whole thing is held with 2 bolts - which I can't help being twitchy about.

When my head was repaired before christmas the mechanic used a genuine metal gasket between the head and the lower thermostat housing, it hasn't leaked yet. Also no paper gasket for top housing, just rubber and a little silastic.

ive got silicone around where it bolts to the head
no leak there got a light leak around the top cover, which i gotta fix over the weekend some time.
