When you fit the dizzy there should be a tiny amount of free play between the gears. By pulling the shaft up and down with it fitted and from side to side. It won't be alot, but enough to tell you if it is binding. Also rotating the engine clockwise by hand will maybe give you a indication too. As if it is binding tightly, it will be slightly harder to turn over. As others have said, easier to get a new cap for it.

id throw that second cap in the bin as well. for the price of a new cap why bother with secondhand stuff? whats the wrecker charge for a dizzy? reco dizzys can be found for around $150-$200 and come with a 12-24 month warranty.
i found this the hard way. dizzy packed up, replaced with a secondhand unit then about 6 weeks latter that one packed up too, wish i bought the reco one to start with, would have saved time and effort.

Dizzy was fitting but no go ! Now have a spark though, i had to go to school and the mechanic was still at my house and i got a phone call from my mum saying that the mechanic wanted to try another coil, and i thought that was BS, i said he should just tow it to his workshop and test the computer on a diagnostics computer !
