hey all

having had a chat with ARM79, he informs me performance harmonic balancers are a load of wank.

what do others think? with my new build would i just be best w/ a new std one, or forking out the cash for a perf one? have people got links to perf ones? (i know a few have used some recently)

cheers!

how can u increace the performance of a harmonic balancer? it makes no sence :P maby u can get a stronger one but i have never heard of one braking inside the engine, or a lighter one, but i guarentee you a quart of petrol weighs more :P so it sort of leaves no real gain :S

I believe you can get some of the Powerbond balancers that are a tad lighter. It would assist the engine when revving hard (and higher than stock limiter)- less crank weight - better balanced - less vibrations.

But I think the main benefit is they are designed to be able to rev past the 6000rpm mark without self destructing. The outer weight is better attached to the inner, so it doesnt come flying off, or sliding on its inner rubber mount.

But I guess unless someone is getting really really silly with power or raising the rev limiter (something not achievable with the stock ecu) its more of a wank factor than a benefit.

And for you to read bob: http://www.precisionparts.com.au/Pages/Product%20Profile/powerbond.htm

Stronger and better balanced.

They're quite popular in the V8 realm - general consensus seems to be that the stock balancer on the 8 is fine up to 5500ish. But if you put an aftermarket intake manifold, heads and exhaust on there - the windsor is going to want to rev much higher than that to produce peak power. If you're approaching/exceeding 6000rpm regularly then it seems to be worth it on the 8.

But... the mods you guys do to the I6... do you find yourself pushing a new redline? i.e. much action above 6k? If not then funds probably better allocated elsewhere imo.
