I am replacing my head gasket (3.9L cpi EA), and while the head is off i am going to mill the head (shave it ) and also put in a mild street race cam. My question is how many thow should i plain off the head? Any help with this would be great

It al depends on the compression your chasing, and what fuel you'll be running, with what advance, and if you are ever gonna boost the engine.
If you are just doing the headgasket, just make sure its flat, and leave it. If you want some perfomance, go for 40thou (quite a bit though). Just remember, you can always go more, but you can't go back (without decomp plates and all that s**t). Cheers

Not going to bother to boost it . Just looking for a bit more compresion, if i did plain down 40 thou how much would a adjustible cam gear cost? and would i have to make any more mods other than extractors?

um.. you can always have more mods lol. Use an AU headgasket (they are stronger), and new headbolts, shave it down, might aswell do valve stem seals, you can always port and polish it while its out, and the adj cam gear should be about $100 I think. Don't forget the shims if the cam is a regrind. Also, might wanna get it dialed in.

cam gear are between $140 and $200 if you take that much off you will need one. one other thing you will get some timming chain noise |

dunno... my mate had 60 thou taken off, and all was well... Stock XR6 cam, no adj cam gear either.

A question about using the AU head gasket insted of the EA, are the blocks the same mold or just very similar

the blocks between the AU blocks and E series blocks are substantial.. but on top they are the same ( AU head goes on E series block ).
The guy I was talking about has an AU head on his EL bottom end, all fit nice. AU ones are metalic, and much stronger... (twin metalic layers I think)... Cheers

be careful putting an au head on a ea-ef. you will also need au rocker gear or you will end up with lots of lifter noise that you can't get rid of. been there done it!!!

no, not that I heard. It was mostly the lifters making noises, but nothing serious. This was all AU gear.. like the whole head was an AU, with an AU XR6 cam. And it was worked. (By Jaysen and ITS Performance [mark]).
The cam/cam gear was meant to be next... Cheers
