Just wondering if any one has had a problem with the hlas pumping up and if so what damage resulted. I have had a previous thread with valve train issues and thought I had it sussed but have just snapped a rocker on #5 exhaust and broken a valve on #5 inlet. I was wondering if using 20W50 oil and the engine was sitting at 5500 revs for a few laps (it is in a speedway car) could cause the HLA to go solid. Any ideas thanks

Never heard of the ford hla's pumping up that much. Chances are it's the valve that's failed first, and caused the rocker arm to break as a secondary event. Check your valve springs/locks/retainers for wear or damage. If it has a spring issue, the other 11 will be on the way out too.
Good luck. :D

The cam is a Wade 977B that has 0.512" lift. Springs in this head are standard. Didnt check
seat pressures. Previous problems were using Tighe cams speedway grind that had 0.527" lift with crow XR springs. Seat pressures on that set were 265lb not sure of seated pressure too long and too many engines ago

check to make sure your rocker arms cant walk if you know what i mean.
if they become slightly off centre (say if the little washer/spring aligning it no longer does its job) the rocker can jam on the rocker behind it

I checked the Wade cams web site and this cam can be used with standard springs and ecu although I run a microtech. Engine was quickly rebuilt with new rings ,bearings and hlas and bolted together. I didnt do any measuring due web site info so once in the car I had to retue the microtech. Car was run for a couple of hours (used 25l of fuel) on the dyno with no sign of any issues. Oil pressure was 40psi. One thing I did notice was the HLA was not exactly in the middle of the valve but due to the way the rocker assembly is installed didnt know there was anything I could do. Is this normal and if not what is the fix. The rockers do not hit each other

What is the head and what are the rocker gear.....ie: head 91AA, 94AB, etc....rocker gear: EA, late EA, EB, ED, EF.....size of HLA's...9mm or 14mm...something like that.

Engine was removed from an ED. head id is 91AA HLA's were 11mm. Since last post I have seen a photo of a head for sale with the HLA misaligned to the valve maybe not unusual? Did not think 5500rpm was that high was more worried and hopeful that the revs and using the 20W50 oil might have been the problem

i think your problems are stemming from slapping the engine together and not checking anything.
Just because Wade says you can use stock springs doesn't mean the springs in your particular head are up the job.

I'd be checking everything. and be putting all the used valve springs you own in the bin.
I'm assuming you have no idea what piston to valve clearance you had?
Was it a regrind cam?
Did you have the HLAs shimmed correctly? Better yet don't use extra shims and have the rocker shaft mounting blocks machined to correct the smaller base circle.

this is what i was getting at...

even if they look alligned when your looking at them it only takes 1mm or so for them to be missaligned and they will jam - but only when the rocker arm behind it is in a certain position.

Like Ticky 6 said.....you ask the big ask from an engine, you gotta build it right....half measures...more than half will fvck up.....plain 'n' simple.

Tickford, points taken but with all the posts on this site about others buying xyz cam and installing it over a weekend I was hoping for the same. It was a wade regrind and I added 1 extra shim as advised
