Ive had my EL fairmont 2 years and since then its gone from 210000 to 240000 and its still going strong! Just look after it and it should be right.

EF 4L needed bearings and rings at 260,000, EB 4L had 340,000KM, no signs of problems, and another EB 4L had 650,000km on it, and had only had 1 rebuild
If the engine is maintained, not modified (too much) and not thrashed, it should easily live to 300,000km.

my engines done 610,000km's as a taxi - owner said it was reguarly serviced and not rebuilt (i doubt he would of said that as a rebuild would of been a plus when buying it). (duel fuel aswell if that effects anything)
Now it's closer to 650,000km's and I've modded it and thrashed it. Still no issues. |

my ED has done 200100, engine is still fine but it did a lot of towing so diff/trans bothe were rooted,
Mum had an EA that had done 250,000 odd k's, and it was still running strong (second trans though) untill she let it run out of oil, my parents have an EF wagon with 350,000 K's (ex country car) and its still going great!, only prob is the S5 solenoid is a bit iffy.

My EA series one 5 speed had 283000km when I sold it, only trouble I had was TPS and the distributor. EFII currently has 247000km, has had head gasket done, ISC and the tranny is on its way. Will go 5spd when it carks it.

'Mont has 302,000 on it.
One head gasket, one dizzy cap, and now it's looking like one Auto Trans 
But yeah, you look after them, and by looking after I mean not thrashing it when it's cold, changing the oil regularly etc. they will last ages. A bit of a fang every now and again doesn't do 'em any harm, long as it's sensible. I know when I first got my P's, and, er, cough, blew the cobwebs out of the 'mont, it felt like a million bucks after, alot stronger.

They will last a lot longer than 220,000kms, as long as you are prepared to treat it correctly.
You need to have the same attitude towards maintenance as you would have for a new car. How many people in this thread have said, 'yeah mine has done xxx,xxxkms and is running fine, apart from.' It is these things that get left, that soon add up to the point where their are so many problems it is nonsensical to repair them all. If that same problem occured on a new car, you would fix it straight away. Why leave it just because the car is getting old? Also worth a mention is the difference between normal city kilometers, and genuine country kilometers. Just think for a second of the difference in number of gearshifts, brake applications, steering movements, wear on interior components, and general stops and starts there is between a car that has just done 100kms driving around the suburbs/city, and one that has just done 100kms in a dead straight line along a highway, without stopping once. Over it's lifetime that soon ads up.

EA has done well roughly 430,000 and motor still goes strong, my mum originaly bought it in '96 with 250,000 on it since then the 3 speed dies early this year. Replaced it with a 5 speed and the the diff went. Hasn't done a headgasket in 9 years of ownership and still goes strong. I give this car hell too but reguarly change fluids etc.
EBII 269,000 k's and the motor needs rings and bearings.

Yeah what Tom said is very true, my XF was in okay condition but thier were alot of little problems with it which p****d me off (not my fault either) and in the end it was cheaper to buy a new car and start from scratch
Wont let that happen to the XR6 thats for sure.

EBII is up around 327000km now. still goes strong. headgasket blew at 300000km. oil and filter is changed every 5000km.

used to have a ED 4.0and when we sold it, it had about 400000 on it and she still hard as when we got her, Our 98 Au Fairmont waqon has just turned over 230000 and not a problem yet * touches wood*

I had a EB ex-taxi with about 1,060,000 K's on it, Engine never had any work done to it, was on to the third auto though. I did the last 60,000 in it, thrashing the living s**t out of it. The only reason I'm still not driving it today is because it got side swiped by a guy running a stop sign. It still had just as much power then anyone’s else’s EB and was running dual fuel.
Keep up with the oil changes and don’t thrash them when their cold and the i6 could go for ever |
