I think electro-magnets are a bit beyond what I can achieve in my shed :D

But I did finally get around to finish the porting on the head this arvo, so I am going to try and knock off a bit early tomorrow and drop it off at the head machine place, to get it faced, new guides and seats.

Dropped the head off today to get faced, seats and guides, hopefully can pick it up by Friday.

Now trying to make a list of everything I am going to need to change it all out, so far I have on the list:

Will be changing head, balancer, timing chain, manifold.

Timing cover gasket set - Have

AU head gasket - Need to get

Rocker cover gasket - Need to get

Head bolts - Need to get

New lifters - Need to get

Timing chain & guides - Need to get

Thermostat gasket - Need to get

Exhaust & Intake gaskets - Need to get

If anyone can think of stuff I may overlook, or need to do the changeover, or know of an alternate to buying from Ford for the items please do tell.

Cheers

Just get a head gasket kit for your model car and replace the standard head gasket for the AU ones. You'll have all the gasket needed as well as the rocker cover retaining bolt seals...which may need replacing if they are cracked.

If you're up to it, change the water pump and hoses.

I didn't see you mention thermostat and gasket (the rubber one, not thermostat housing to head).

That would be good Matt.

I tell ya, I don't understand why you would put someone in the Ford parts department that doesn't know anything?

Two different Ford parts people tried to tell me that the head gaskets are the same part for EF and AU, neither knew what the hell a MLS was. Finally found one that agreed that they were different part numbers, but couldn't tell me anything but what their computer said ie: it's a gasket for an AU  Can anyone confirm the a standard Ford AU head gasket is a MLS or do I just go for an Atomic one for $185?

Also is their any difference in using aftermarket Repco head bolts over Ford? as there is a $70 difference in price. VRS gasket set is also $120 more expensive from Ford compared to Sprints.

The timing chain is discontinued from Ford.

If it's any good to you mate, I've got a timing chain and upper guide in very good condition that I bought ages ago to replace the one's in my blown motor... however the motor was blown so they've been siting in a bag for ages.

I'm fairly certain that the std genuine AU gasket is MLS, from what i have read on here and heard anyway.

Shiftkits.com.au also sell the MLS AU gaskets as well.. LINK

How much ya want for them?

Was just talking to Atomic, they do a head stud kit for them, it is a bit expensive, but they aren't throw away like standard bolts, and no probs getting the head off in the car as the studs have hex heads, and can just be taken out with an allen key, decisions, decisions?

Standard AU head gasket is MLS...Pre-AU are all paper/composite stuff (or whatever it's made off).

I haven't heard anything bad with aftermarket head bolts...in saying that I am using Ford Genuine ones because I have a mate that got me cheaper prices from Ford, next engine build will have aftermarket bolts to save cost. I bought a VRS head gasket kit from Repco and haven't had any issues with the gaskets, it's been 2 years...Ford just over price a lot me thinks.

Thinking about just getting a JMM gasket set which includes; Full rebuilt gasket set + MLS head gasket, works out cheaper than getting a bit here and a bit there.

Still haven't decided on head bolts or Stud kit though?

bolts, i dont know how you could justify the price of studs for one of these things unless you planned on taking the head off every week or had massive cylinder pressure courtesy of forced induction.
just use assembly lube on the bolt threads and under side of the bolt head, will give you even and correct stretch.
