what can be a cause to my EL intermediate starting. some days it starts and some days it doesn't. it turns over ok some days and then sometimes it will drive and then it will stop dead and wont start again but turns over. i have replaced the coil in it with one from a wreckers as i thought it was that and the RAA told me it was that. i have also replaced the starter motor in it. as the old one use to grind and once it was out. i found out it was disengaging . The new coil was in i take it for a run and it only made it up the street before it stopped dead again and wont start but will turn over. I'm currently stuck on the street and have no clue to what it could be, unless the coil that i brought from the wreckers is stuffed as well. My next thought to what it could be is the distributor but not to sure as i have never owned a EL before :?

If someone could please give me some HELP to what it could be i would appreciate it :)

Hi,

The Dizzy would be my first suspect. Prone to failure, at least the module on the side. It still could be fuel, are you sure the spark is the cause ? I remember fixing a car that belonged to a friends workmate. The nrma said it needed a fuel pump and relay. I put petrol in and it started. ( bad gauge, until it runs properly dont believe everything you hear ) Anyway when it stops next, place an old spark plug on the exhaust manifold connected to one of the leads. As you crank it you will see / hear the spark.

If it is the Dizzy, you can replace the module on the side or the whole unit. There are Chinese made ones around, and the drive gear chews out the drive shaft in the engine. Have a look through Posts here about that. ( people swap the original drive gear onto them ) A 2nd hand one may be worn, or still could have a dodgy module.

Chasing a similar issue. I'm currently suspecting its smartlock related. Mostly starting related the morning after a longer drive

thanks guy.it stop last nite the same way it keeps on doing but when i get it today at first it didnt want to start. so i thought ok ill check the spark again. pull off the first spark lead and place a screw driver against the exhaust and it sparked an orange spark and started even with the spark lead off the plug. turned it off replaced the lead and it started again drove it home. any thought on what colour should the spark be as im a holden man and the holdens spark is blue. could it be my leads or plug.

orange = weak spark,
take the dist cap off, and check the carbon post in the centre of it as it could be worn out,
the other thing it could be is a bad tfi module
