My ef 4.0 auto has been giving me grief lately going into limp home mode.
My question is does the trans have a temp sender or like an oil overtemp shutdown setup. The car only ever does it when the car is hot and doesnt have a cooler,i have checked all the trans plugs and cleaned them and the oil is off colour but not burnt(usual for fords). Doesnt do it all the time though but last night i had to stop 4 times on a couple of kays trip and reset the ecu but as soon as i drove off, bang into limp mode. The car was towed home last night but ran fine today

This most often is the Transmission Range Sensor on the Gearbox - it gets crud in it, and then it cant tell what gear you want.
But... take to a tranny shop. They test, they fix the actual breakage not just try fixing everything Cheers Nigel |

Yes they do have a sump temperature sensor but I don,t know if it can put the trans into limp home mode.

IIRC overheating can do LHM, but the ECON caption should flash - I suspect you're not getting the caption.
Check the ECU fault codes engine not running - something should surely be logged.

If the box overheats on an EF the thermos will also come on, but the transmission with still shift normally. If it gets really hot like you said econ light will flash, and the gearbox will go straight to lock-up in 3rd and 4th

Pulled some codes today with my led test light
Engine off ignition on 111 - system pass 169 - this number isnt even in my manual Engine on ignition on 411 - base idle speed irregularity 521 - power steering pressure switch(open circuit) Checked base idle like the book says with the .75mm feeler gauge etc and it was about 150 rpm too high, so that was reset to 720 rpm like it says in the book. I havent had any probs with the power steering as yet, do the pressure switches just die sometimes?

Yeah my bad re overheating - all shifts as per normal.
If you turn your steering wheel with the engine idling, and the revs increase, then the PS s/w is okay. Had a similar thing on an EB a few months ago - changed the ECU, LHM disappeared. I'd suggest doing same - find someone with an EF 4.0 auto ECU, swap over - they should be pretty common. Plug/wiring issues aside, there's not much else.

thanks alot for the replies
Would a failed p/s pressure switch or high idle cause the car to go into limp home mode or should i look for other probs? Every time the car went into limp home mode it thumped into gear hard and then that was it-third gear all the way home. Ecu swapping isnt a bad idea too, the thought had crossed my mind.

Im still thinking the trans range sensor.
Were you driving manual at all (as in shifting manually)? Limp home mode happens when it happens. If you have your code reader running when it happens you might get a code as well. |

Trans range sender sounds like it might be worth a look because i havent cleaned or even looked at that.
In saying that what does it look like?

White plastic thing on the Passenger side of the transmission - bit like an L of sorts, has 2 connectors on it (4 pin molex, and a 2 pin EFI injector style one).
Not adjustable, not cleanable. Supposedly - but then again take a look and see what you can do |

Disconnect the ECU connector, and check the resistance between pins 64 & 91 with a meter in PRND321 - post them here if you don't have a gregories/ellery's etc to check if they are in tolerance.
If there are probs, clean the 2 pin connector on the neutral safety switch and redo the meter checks.

You should probably note that like TPS Sensors, if they have dirt in them they become non-linear : you might read the correct resistance, but a small bump will change them off the scale (and then the ECU goes into limp-home mode).
