hi all
well its been 6 months and 5000 km later.. normally i change the oil every 3 months and i usually do about 5000km. but the car wasnt driven for nearly 3 months.. anyway there was a fair bit of sludgy fine metal (which looks alittle scary)on the magnet and it hasnt seemed to have lost any of its strength.. so there you go! so far it seems to be doing its job..

yea i know .
but i kind of freaked me out at first . im thinking s**t that stuff constantly runs through the engine... im glad i got the magnetic plug now.. |

<Havn't got one, but was reading this site & it talks about magnets attached to the outside of the oil filter, which I assume would do a similar thing.>
I had a look at the site. This looks like a bit of a scam. Magnets on the outside ?? The filter casing will act as a magnetic shield. Try it sometime. The magnetic field strength on the other side of the metal casing will be extremely minute. The same principle is used in RF shielding. You need the magnetic pole in contact with the oil. |

I've got one in my car, for the sake of a few bucks why not. Although I've never seen any s**t stuck to it when changing the oil but I'm paranoid anyway, plus I work at repco and we sell them.

check if they have neodinium magnets, they are by far the best and they don't degrade like normal magnets..
Neodinium magnets are used in tweeters and some motors, (like those used in PC harddisk drives) they are much more expensive than normal magnets, but allow much smaller size for the same magnetism and like I said, they last much longer too. |

had one for a while now, i get them free from work
 They work really well i reckon, shows you whats going on beween oil changes.

The magnet won't pick up non-ferrous materials that the engine also has, like bearing material, alloy from the rockers & pistons, plastic from the chain guides and silicates from dust.

Nope, but I read somewhere about surrounding your filter with neodinium magnets, and you'll not get metal filings pumped around your motor.
Doesn't mean you should let your motor go longer between changes, just means that when you change the filter, the chances are good that there will be less filings in the sump. |

The average size hole in the filter medium in the oil filter is around 4 microns.

yeah, I know, but if the incoming flow results in all particulates stuck to the outside of the can... wouldn't that keep the filter itself considerably cleaner and free flowing as a result?

Just how much of a problem is metal in your oil? I change my oil every 5000k's, sometimes a fair bit earlier and it often comes out very dark.
