hey guys

I have run into a number of problems with my car over the past few days, as it started overheating and pissing water everywhere, I assumed a blown heat gasket... i wont go on explaining all the unnessasarys...

anyhow.. I got the car towed into Ethridge Ford to get them to have a look at it, and the verdict is that I have a blown head gasket, my head is completely f**k and needs to be replaced, and there were some issues with my lifters and welsch plugs.

They quoted me $1600 odd to replace the head (with a reco-ed one which they will supply including fitting etc) also a further $560 odd dollars to replace the lifters and welsch plugs... in total everthing come to a whopping $2200

I almost dropped the phone when they told me all this, Is this a complete rip off... or is it not far off the mark for the amount of work being done?

They did give me the option of providing another head myself...?

If someone could shed some light on the subject, that would be great!

This is the last thing i need at the moment, I have no money and would like to spare as much as possible

Cheers guys

reason I went there was because they owe my dad a few favours due to them leaving his car with its keys in it while it was getting serviced.. and having it stolen for 2 days... so they said they will look after me.. hmmmmm

2200 bucks, sounds like the only thing they're looking after is their monthly bonus.

Seriously - if that's their best price, save the favour for another day.

Plenty of members from Vic here, someone should be able to recommend a good place to have it done.

Maybe track down a head and then spend some money having it worked? Cam, porting etc.

Seriously it isnt all that bad, however there is definately some savings to be made. Go get some quotes from other places and show the more expensive places the lower quotes. But alos remember, cheapest isnt best. When i wento to get my head done I went to the nearest place which was trusted, and i paid around 1300 for a reconditioned head (which they said was new) and fitting. ten weeks later i was back there, getting another head replaced, this time free, and this time its lasted a bit longer. Both heads cracked under the camshaft above 4 and 5 cylinders. As for lifters and the rest, im not sure what youd expect to pay.

do you know of any decent places? I guess you wouldnt seeing as u are from south aus.

I'd like to get the head ported and new cam and stuff like that.. but that would set me back several thousand (im asuming) and I really dont have the money, unless you could tell me otherwise, I'm open to make improvements if ii can get the rest of the stuff done cheaper through someone else.

thanks for the advice

I was quotes round 2700 for a reco'd engine fitted by a mechanic i know. If it truly is going to cost that much it would seriously consider just replacing it.

ooooh xr6 motor sounds VERY tempting... either way sounds like it will work out to be alot less... My engine has done 148,500.. do you have any engines that have done anything close to that?

I'm really strongly thinking about doing this... if an xr6 motor could be organised.. how soon could all this be done?

I really hope that ford do not charge me too much for the labour they have already done....

thanks heaps darren

XR6 motor is in stock as well as a standard motor.
would need to talk to the mechanics as to when it could be fitted
but allow a couple of days. i can arrange to have it towed over for $50

Do you know how many k's the xr6 engine has done?

Will I need to change my ecu or anything else in my car in order to facilitate the xr6 engine?
