Hi guys,

I have never drained my engine fully of oil before and was wondering how to go about it. The reason i need to do it is because i have noisy lifters and my mechanic said that the sound should go if i drain all the oil out of the engine (by running it out with the engine going or something) and changing the oil filter and putting in some nulon tappet noise additive stuff.

Can you guys tell me what order to do things in and how to do them? i havent' done this sort of thing b4

NEVER run a motor with no oil in it for start.

Undo the sump plug drain the oil, remove the oil filter (will need the rigth tool / filter remover)

replace filter hand tight, remember lip of oil on seal first, user a rubber kitchen glove to get grip on filter to do it up.

put sump lug back in

Top up the oil till full, about 6L, after about 3L add the tappet stuff then finish filling, check level is about right, start motor let idle for a few minutes, tappets should go quite, after letting it stand for 5 mins, check level and for leaks top up if needed.

Maybe what the mechanic meant was to run the car first and get it up to temp. That way it will be thinner and drain out better.

I can agree with that, dont run it too long, hot oil burns :wink:

You should grab some engine flush, the fortron stuff is goo and its cheap. what you do is put it in your engine, run your engine for 2 mins let the oil get up the top end and the drop the oil and filter. thats the way the dealerships do it. i should know i have done 100's of times.. (and burnt myself on the hot oil) so watch ur self!

A Valiant engine had this done, was a bet between a ford and Valiant bloke, the guy undid his sump gave it to the Ford guy, drove home, said I'll drive back in a week to get that to prove my cars tougher, he drove home with no oil drove back with no oil, put sump plug on filled her up and she ran like nothing happened.

I'd never try it in my car.

As for running the engine to get all the oil how would that work? I mean I thought once the engine oil rose up to the top it would flow around there for a while.
Sounds to me like your mechanice wants to rip you an engine rebuild! LOL!

As for engine flush, if your donks got high milage i wouldn't use it, heard it often causes leaks then.
Maybe try some Nulon Lifter Free to stop the hydrolic lash adjusters, worked on my car.

As for the oil change - I like the hotter the better when draining it, then it is the thinner it will ever get and will empty out really well. If you burn yourself - oh well, such is life, at least you know you have done the job properly!!! :)

I'll do it today, does the 4.0L motor take 6L? if so thats crap because i got the genuine ford iol but its only in a 5L container

so i need to go get a 1L bottle too? ok

does the car have to be on a level surface or doesn't it really matter?
