ok my ute has 170 000 km's and is starting to become rough at idle which i was attributing to my driving style. but after checking fluids i believe that i may have done a head gasket. there is a brown slightly milky sludge in the waster and it is drinking a small amount of water. but there isnt any water in the oil.
if any one could shed some light on this it would be much appreciated. david. |

the rough idle may be caused by coolant leaking into the combustion chamber, definitely sounds like the head gasket is gone and maybe the head(get it checked for cracks)

thats what i was thinking but i was under the impression that there would be water in the oil as well as oil in the water.
i will go and take it off in the next couple of days. |

As above, rough idle caused by that.
Also if it is cactus, coolant usually bleeds out the between the head and block near pistons 5&6. It then evaporates from the exhaust and is slightly harder to track. Look for evident marks on the block and around the welsh plugs. If it is gone, don't be a a*** and buy a monotorque VRS kit, buy a Genuine AU gasket and fix it properly, use a cheapo composite gasket and you'll do it again in a few years if lucky.

Not always, it depends on where the gasket/head lets go as to whether it goes water in oil, oil in water or both or neither, just coolant in the combustion chamber. Last time i did the head on a 4.0 it only had coolant leaking into the chamber from a crack, no oil or coolant or vice versa was mixing it just ran rough until i went to start it one morning and the chamber was full of coolant

thanks mate i think i will drive the f**k till it explodes. and while doing this rebuild an au motor then when it dies or the motor is finished i will put it in.

get some chemiweld to fix it temporarily
 if you dont plan to keep the motor.Ive heard of chemiweld sometimes keeping a motor alive for a while longer

sorry brother i didn't mean to be a d**k i was just making sure the point got across as it is hard with not being able to talk to the other person.
and i would not use chemiweld as it is for broken heads not gaskets and does not work as well in that situation. and its been a long day so i didn't mean to be a C**k head. |

 Anyways, i personally do not like chemiweld and would not use it in any of my cars. It has a problem, fix it  The last quote that i got was like $110 to machine, pressure test the head. $90 for gasket kit, $40 for head bolts. Yes these were trade but we only got like 20% off and that was not the headwork either. That is a normal price. Alot of the cost of the headgasket with going to a mech is the labour involved in it. I don't think either party was insulting each other.
"Milo 302" was just saying just throw some chem-i-weld in it to keep it going for now, as your building a new motor anyways. Its virtually impossible to discyphor typing sarcasm. and as above, I would only use chem-i-weld if i had too, not on a motor i was keeping.
