Check for crank end play, could be the chain is hitting the cover.

put a big screw driver behind the crank pully and see if you can lever it forward (dont break anything tryin it) if it moves you have to much free play. Also check your tensioner has been released properly, ask your engine guy if he replaced it, if not throw a new one in!

Not the reply your looking for but if all else fails use Moreys Oil Stabiliser to reduce noise and wear.

The tensioner requires oil pressure to operate , I think this comes from an hole in the block, perhaps this is partially blocked or the o ring is missing or damaged when the timing cover was installed.

the first tentioner was a 2nd hand one,but when it was pulled apart again, i got new tentioner and guides, its like when the chain goes thru the guide its pushing hard against it and just eats it alot quicker with a horrible RRrrrrrrrr

I don't know if I'm having the same problem as you but my old 6 has developed a nasty ticking sound from the head. I took it down to my mechanic and he said it may be the hydraulic lifters. I'm still waiting for him to give me the verdict but it might be something to check.
