How much better is a BA over the AU? I have driven my Dad's BA Xr6 and think its fantastic and am thinking bout getting a new car. Is it worth the extra cash for a BA over a nice Au?
what about fuel economy? |

In what way? I have been told that Au's have a better turn in but the BA's are more controlled on the open road. Im looking at getting an Au Fairmont Ghia and a BA Fairmont.
Also wondering about reliability. |

they au just feels alot more composed and balanced...
alot smoother on hwy's too.. ba's brake better though... when driving both quite hard the au felt alot tighter than the ba... |

If youre looking for a comfort drive which by looking at the monts you are, take the b series. If youre chaseing a sharper driving experience take the au. reliability wise the au is abetter option, less little annoying problems and being a little older the bigger stuff has been sorted already

I tend to disagree. We own both- our BA feels heaps more tighter in every aspect. Cornering, braking, etc. The AU is much roomier tho. The only thing i dont like about the BA is its hesitation when you step on it. The AU is way better in this aspect but the AU is also a V8 where as the BA is an XR6.

the au with a 6 is that few kg lighter in the front end and thats what makes the difference, its all personal preference but.

AU is better in nearly every way.
All ba's ive driven have had super heavy, doughey steering. My au is the opposite in that regard. All round, I think the ba and bf just feels like driving such a big and heavy car whereas the au seems more "chuckable" to me.

I've owned both a BA and AU XR6....... I sold the BA to buy an AU series 3 XR6 ST, Nuff said !!

Matey, I own an AU XR6 series I and drive a BA MkII nearly every day for work. It is a ute against my sedan but the only thing I can say about the BA is that the power steering is a little better and the brakes.
The extra you pay for a BA/BF XR6 I don't see the value. The cost of the extras to replace make it a lost deal. If you can get a good AU XR6 II or III I would suggest you buy it.

I regularly drive an AU, BA and BFII and even though the B series turn in better, their steering is weighted too heavy. I don't know if its the actual weight increase in the car or the suspension setup but it feels a lot heavier than the AU. Having said that, the car feels more planted on the road compared to an AU.
The AU has more interior space. the AU IRS is almost as compliant as the B series IRS. Live axle seems almost pre historic in comparison. Since you've narrowed it down to an AU Fairmont Ghia or BA Fairmont you've got too plush models to choose from. if it was me and the 2 cars were staring me in the face saying pick me pick me, I'd take the car that was in better condition. They are different cars but a poorly maintained example will ruin your driving experience. |

I have an EL with a steering pump on the way out. But i havnt replaced it because i like the weighty feel. Dads BA is fairly close in terms of feel, but the car feels much bigger. I love the car, i think i just need to drive an AU. |
