My rocker cover gasket is starting to leak significantly and as my car is going to be sitting for 3 months not really doing much, I figure I should change it before it gets worse (which it will). If I follow the changing head gasket doco, will that give me enough info? It seems like a pretty straight forward job, I just want to be sure im not going to run into any tricky bits.

As far as buying the gasket, can I just buy it from my local supercheap or repco? or do I have to buy a full head gasket kit?

You will need more than the rocker cover gasket ( which is sort of like an 'O'ring ), you will need the 4 rubber gromet looking things that go under the heads of the bolts......these are what apply pressure to the gasket. The crush tube is what stops the bolt coming undone.....and has the larger area at the top to cover the gromet.

You can buy a rocker cover seal separately and they're available from most auto shops. After you remove all the air intake pipe with the top of the air box, several hoses connected to the rocker cover, brake vacuum hose, disconnect spark plug leads from the plugs, you're down to 4 bolts that hold the rocker cover on. After you replace the seal just tighten the bolts to 10 ft/lb & reassemble everything. Not too difficult. :D

ARRGH, cjh you beat me to it :)
