Hi guys,

I was hoping when i get my engine rebuilt to run it in best possibel way. I was told a long time ago that its best to driv eit all in at once say on a long trip to gold coast cause the first 500 kms the car shouldnt go over 2,500 rpm then after that best to only go up to 4,000 rpm for the next 300-400 kms then after that basicly run in.

Ive heard thsi off a few people as the ebst way to run a engine in. Yet some people say thats completly wrong way aroudn that first 400 kms should be around 3,000 with variable speeds all the time witha few squirts past that then for the next 400 kms can go up to 4,500 rpms witha few squirts. and that thsi is better for engine.

So now im asking you what do you guys think and experiences.

when running in my motorbike i did a lot of research on this and found the best way is to make sure the engine revs freely, so you should always be in a lower gear than normal. You dont want to over rev it especially before the first oil change. Remember to do very frequent oil changes and change the iol filter after about the second or third oil change. you dont need to use expensive oil at first because it will only be in the engine for a few hours use. Also you dont want the engine to be cruising at a constant R.P.M. so try to vary your engine speed often. Hope this helps it worked for me.

I thought the general rule was just to vary engine speed, with a bit of load on it every now and again, and not to give it too many revs for awhile.

For the first 200-300km you dont want to rev it too hard. try and keep under 3000-4000. Vary the engine speed, vary the loads (try not to give WOT too soon!). Then after that slowly start introducing higher engine speeds and longer load durations. Probably steer clear of max engine speed until you're over 1000KM and you have your proper running oil in place.

This should all be done over a week at minimum, the worst thing you can do is go for a 1000KM drive.

I tend to agree not to go too easy on the engine, give it a hard time when its fully warmed up - should bed it in nicely. Probly best to go easy for the first 2-300km though.

just do what ever the guy who builds it tells you to do.
that way if some thing goes wrong he can't say you didn't run it right.


if it were built by me i'd have already put at least 250km on it with penrite running oil and crane break-in aditive, befor you got it. I'd tell you to to go find the bigest hill mountain you can and drive up it 2nd.
and basicly not to rev it to high eg. less then 4000rpm.
once you have put an other 250km bring it back to have new semi synthetic oil and a new filter.

you'll then need to put a further 500km on it driving like the average person would on the way to work. generly medium loads with no more then 4000rpm.for then next 500km do what you like with it.

then back in for new synthetic oil and a new filter. after that you can drive how ever you like.

you'll also be told that the engine needs to be serviced every 5000km

Thats very similar to the way we run in all our truck engines here at work. Start the engine and let it idle at 1500rpm (bearing in mind rev limit is 2200rpm) till it reaches operating temp. Turn it off, check it foe leaks etc. Then we chain them down on the dyno and load the f**k out of em. Basically because everthing written in that document has been proven correct by Cummins engineers back in the states, therefore thats what the manufacturer recommends. And yes thay may be diesel powered but they are still an internal combustion engine. If a component is going to fail it is going to fail due to two things. Faulty manufacturing or incorrect assembly, and there is nothing you can do to prevent a failure in either instance. Any fresh engine Ive ever owned have been run in like this including my clubman go-kart which used to accelerate and rev harder than other karts that had been run in the "traditional" way with lighter and more experienced drivers on board. The only thing it could be put down to is run in as no mods are allowed.
