Hello,

Recently I've replaced the Ford AUII water pump with an aftermarket type, the pulley seems a bit different from the original but was told it should be the same.

Had no problems after reconnecting. Had no noise issues all seemed good. That was done about 4 weeks ago or so.

2 weeks ago I replaced the alternator due to oil in the unit. A spare alternator I had was bench tested and was good to go. Replaced it and no problems.

However, yesterday I heard bit of squeal when first running engine, the squeal goes eventually. This morning I was worse.

I popped the bonnet open to check for any problems....ye, pulley belt had been rubbing against the arm of the tensioner and also moved forward on the water pump pulley.

Belt looked susc so I replaced with a brand new one...same thing happened.

Upon starting the engine, a noisey squeal then noticed the ribbed belt starting to slide quickly forward with some ribbing off the pulley, this was noticed on the tensioner pulley also.

I replaced the tensioner and still the problem persisted.

Something is not right but bugger if I know where the problem or cause of the problem.

I've checked every other pulley with the belt off and all pulleys don't feel worn or any noise emitted.

Its interesting to note the belt slipping forward on the water pump is sort of being in line with the crank shaft pulley. This has happened only recently.

I cannot recall going up any unusual embankments or hitting something from underneath the vehicle to make it go like that.

Surely the alternator cannot be out of alignment as it has a support bracket at the rear and bolted correctly at the front, including support bar that goes from alternator to power steering pump.

Would anyone have an idea what might be causing this?

Have a good look at the Harmonic Balancer ( Crankshaft pulley ) it may be stuffed and has moved. You are not having a good run with it lately, I hope things improve for you.

Yes, not wrong. Crankshaft pulley, I would not have thought of that. I'll have a good check of it. and check the other pullies again.

I think you're right about the Crankshaft pulley (Harmonic Balancer).

I noticed its a bit further out than what it should be, maybe that's the cause of it.

I noticed shiney metal at the back, whether that's an indication it has moved forward is hard to say as I have never checked the position or condition of the harmonic balancer previously.

I've attached some pics, hopefully it might provide a clue.

check balancer ... it's sounds like the rubber ring is stuffed ... the outer ring can move on it's own. had this happen to mine & only noticed the problem when gearbox was replaced AND aircon was regassed. the belt didn't move on mine but i worked out what was wrong when i pulled on belt & balancer turned replaced balancer & no more problems with steering electrical etc etc

The Pully has moved, you will need to replace it ASAP.

I did try to check balance with my hands, cant feel it move on its own, ran engine without belt for couple of secs, no noise, then put the belt on again, start engine , then weird squeal noise, as in belt slip.

Is the balancer hard to remove and install?

I'm going to try and replace it myself, just need to know what steps and tools I need to get it done.

You will need to remove the bolt in the centre of the Balancer, and you will need a special puller to remove the balancer.

Would you know what size the bolt is by any chance? I assume the bolt would screw off anti clockwise.

Unfortunately I don't know anyone that has those special pullers to remove balancer. Sounds like an order via ebay.

There are a few harmonic balancers displayed on Ebay. Some have that teeth gear at the back, others I noticed don't have even though they advertise will fit Ford AU.

Do I need to replace like with like?

There may be a Forum member who has one close by, but the special tool will cost a bit and you may only use it once. It may be worth paying someone to do the job.

Hi, I agree, its an expensive tool just for a one off, chances are I may not use the toll again.

Would mobile mechanics do this type of work or chances more of a workshop job?

Certainly not going to the expense of getting a tow truck, I've already taken the belt off and tensioner.

If there was someone on this forum that resides in the Brisbane area that can do this job, might be a bit cheaper but wishful thinking more likely.

yeah i bought one ...... and broke it lol ... got sent a replacement, so if ya was closer i could help out. but i'm in mexico ... so that ain't gunna happen over night most mechanics 'should' have one i think .. but . hopefully someone close can help out

bloody hell, breaking a pulley remover. No worries, yep, your too far down.

Yes, hopefully someone closer otherwise might not have much choice then to get a mobile mechanic to come out and do the removal.

Hopefully replacing the pulley wont need any special tools, surely

I used to know a mechanic that I borrowed tools from. The first time I asked him I offered to leave a deposit (value of the tool) and charge me for the use of it. I collected the tool on a Saturday and returned it first thing on Monday morning. He never wanted any money nor a deposit. He liked Ouzo so he got a bottle of it every time.
