Hi guys,

I've got a pretty old ex cop ED Falcon which has done at least 300k km's, maybe many more, I'm not sure on the true amount because the odo has been broken ever since i've had the car, which has it stuck on 240k

Every now and then when I start the car for the first time of the day, the engine will tap for about a minute, if i sit and let it idle it will go away on it's own after this minute, however most days it doesn't do this at all so I was just curious if it would be worth while for me to invest in thicker oil? I'm currently using 15w40, cant remember the brand, it's in the boot. Should I up it to 20w40 or keep it at 15w?

wow 15w40 is way too thin for a motor with that many kms. i'd go to at least a 20w50

It's just the regular |6, most of whatever mods they did to it are gone now i assume, I think all that's left is the chip, exhaust and maybe some other stuff, I never really found out exactly what was done to it but it is certainly faster then your average stock ED.

So 20w50 then? any other recommendations or is that the final say ?

Regular Oil and Filter changes will also help give an extended life time to Tappets ;). I'm about to throw in a new Camshaft into my ED, and the Tappet's have now had it, so I'm replacing the whole lot of them at the same time as I'm doing the camshaft. A tip that i've been given is to soak the new tappets in oil (20w50, which is what I run in my ED) for a couple of day's too.

well the tapping will most likely be the rockers. meaning oil pressure isn't getting to the top end quick enough. meaning with the kms wear of the bearings and oil pump has happened. which is normal. so they run 15w40 standard. the next step up on both sides is a 20w50. just don't buy cheap s**t. buy a decent name brand. also what brand of filter do you run? i personally run a genuine motorcraft. but i'm a picky prick

I should have made myself a bit clearer in my original post, I'm a pretty massive car newb so i don't know what you guys are talking about there when it comes to Tappets and compliance plates, lol

I still have the original manual for the car in the glove box which says I can run 20w50 if thats what you mean... but Tappets... no idea. :P

There's nothing flash about my car so im running whatever filter it had in it when I bought it almost a year ago, I recently got a new job which means I'm going to start spending more on the car to keep it going for longer, It's a bloody good engine to have survived this long and still drives super comfortable, so i plan on trying to keep it going as long as i can.

Being a massive newb on most of these subject any advice would certainly not go astray, I have read the multiple FAQs around which i would just like to say have been incredibly helpful.
