Hey guys, not sure if this is in the right spot or not (spose thats why I'm asking the question)

I took the car in for a service the other day, and they said that the "extension housing seal" was leaking.

Unfortunately the girl at the front counter didnt know what it was when i quized her, and the mechanics were all busy.

So my question is: What is the extension housing, and is it normal for it to be leaking?

Cheers,
Nic

well you have a falcon with a 4 speed auto so yeah it is normal for them to leak. they arent supposed to but they do.

its basically the housing at the back of the gearbox. the drive shaft slips into/bolts into. there is a seal in there that is prone to leak in them.

one of those things that cost more in labour than the part. check how bad its leaking and if you cant be bothered doing it just degrease occasionally and keep an eye on auto level

lol, yeah nicely spotted, i do have an auto.

so its just the rear seal then for the tailshaft to go into the gear box.

sweet. thanks for that (Quick response to btw lol)

(Thinks: I need new seal, and new tranny fluid... I'm the best part of the way to a cheap manual conversion...)

if the extension houseing seal is leaking then i bet the rear bush is on the way out,as the seal don't normaly leak unless the bush is shot.

Well the bush provides support for the tailshaft yoke in the extension housing of the tranny. If it is worn it allows movement of the yoke at speed creating vibrations and additional stress to the rotating components including the Uni joints. The movement also buggers up the seal and you then loose tranny fluid out the back of the transmission.

I had the bush and seal replaced last week for $120 before driving up to QLD.

Finally no oil over the back of the car.

Recommend you get it fixed.

BenJ
