Hey guys
I have an old Alpine VR (SWS-3049), at the bottom of the specifications sheet it recommends that for the sub in a sealed box to be "4.34 cu. ft.". Is this right? This seems huge. Is it okay to have it in a smaller box?

I just went out and measured up the boot. What would be the difference in sound quality/loudness of the sub if I installed it in a 2.6 cu.ft. sealed box compared to the suggested 4.34 cu.ft..
With the construction of the box am I better off to use 12mm MDF or 16mm MDF?

from my experience a smaller box than recommended gives less sound. However if you are saving more boot space, then the trade off could be worth it

Most 12 inch subs i have encountered have reccommended 1.2 cub feet for each 12 inch, and i used this math on my last big stereo setup, and had a 2.2 cube box for 2 reverse mouinted 12's. It has to be a typo, that is a stupidly massive box.

Check with an Alpine dealer but I think i's about right. It wasn't unusual for a sub to need a freakin huge box a few years ago.
The difference between using the recommended size and one smaller is that the smaller one will not go as low. Having said that, unless you are measuring it or competing, it will probably be good enough in whatever size you can give it. Also, 12mm MDF is too thin for a sub box. I'd say 18mm minimum.

Oh i forgot to mention also that was for 2 alpine subs btw, so yeah i reckon its a typo.

It's no typo, I just modelled the specs, and I come up with a 156L box size. They're s**t subs.

At least its alpine.... I'm sure there are worse subs out there... And when I get some money I can upgrade later. Anyway, I'm making the box flush with the rear seats. Should I have the sub directed into the cabin or back into the boot? will it make a difference?

Just used the Google/fordmods hybrid search function on the direction the sub should face. I am going to face it to the rear.

Just make up a 2.5" cu box, that way if/when you upgrade to a newer sub your box will be pretty much on the money.

4+ cubes for two 12"s is correct - slightly on the larger side for sealed setup but as previously mentioned with the older woofers this is true - these days technologies have advanced and drivers have become more efficient with much larger power handling characteristics...
These days around 1cuft per sub sealed and 1.8-2ft3 for ported is about average for round the 500w RMS.... As that 4ft3 value is for two 12"s its quite a large enclosure but you can see from the Fs parameter these are tuned quite low - 28Hz....nothing stopping you tuning to a higher frequency and smaller sealed enclosure (if going ported Id advise against going much smaller than 3.5ft3 for these drivers).

I ended up making a 2.6cu. ft. sealed enclosure. Sounds good IMO. Haven't got around to tuning it up properly yet though.
