I'm limited by $$ and hearing
So looking at a medium range amp and am trying to choose one out of the 2 on the short list. MTX RT404 37w X 4 @ 4ohm's or MTX Thunder 3404 50w X 4 @ 4ohm's and a Pioneer 600w 4 channel amp. What I don't really understand is I hear great things about the MTX's, yet the MTX's here both have a THD of 0.25% at 1 Watt, while the Pioneer has a Total Harmonic Distortion of 0.008% @ 1 Watt. 0.25% or 0.008%. Big difference I think. I'm surprised by it though... |

I'm guessing that amp is the Pioneer 6100F.
It's actual power output is 50w rms x 4 @ 4 ohms, matched to their range of speakers. I have it, and am very happy with it, however I wouldn't recommend it UNLESS your headunit has inbuilt crossovers! The 6100F only has two very pathetic "HP, LP, or FR" switches. Other then that, it's is crystal clear with the Pioneer speakers I have, looks nice sitting in my boot, and has 4 gauge terminals for power and earth.

The same amount as a Pioneer 6100F I suppose. It'll be driving the Alpine 171A speakers I have, should be alright. It seems like a very quiet S&N ratio wise, nice high 100. And I like the 0.008% THD.
BTW, that MTX Thunder 3404 4 channel 800w amp has a signal to noise ratio of 75 DB. It doesn't look all that great on paper does it. Maybe all the showy flashy lights on the front of the thing (it dances to music and changes color) does something to the sound quality?

Kenwood DX8047 2 DIN 6.5" screen. It has built in crossovers, and listening position control. It might be good with this Pioneer too, it has a 24 bit DAC, Burr Brown I think. |

Yep, Pioneer for the 4 channels. And my existing, measly 60 Watt Kicker amp, running my measly 8" Kicker sub. But let me say, the Kicker is surprisingly very good. I've always been happy with it. Goes nice and loud for what it is.
I might update to twin Alpine 10" subs for the boot next year. |

If I were to go by that equation, I'd be selling my Ford and buying a Hyundai.
These are the specs as above. *MTX 800W 50 X 4 into 4 OHM* Signal to Noise ratio 75db = (lower value = higher background noise) Total Harmonic Distortion 0.25% @ 1 Watt *Pioneer 6100F 50 X 4 into 4OHM* Signal to Noise ration 100db = (higher value = lower background noise) Total Harmonic Distortion 0.008% @ 1 Watt IMO the MTX can't be that much better than running all 4 speakers off the Kenwood deck. Except the MTX will have much greater headroom and dynamic output. But at normal full bandwidth listening levels, the Kenwood deck is probably just as good as the MTX's mentioned here.
I've decided on the Pioneer this time. For the money, seems to represent good sound quality. |

Ok, the whole lots been fully installed. Just some fine tuning to do now.
I'm getting background hiss in the speakers, when no source is being played. Same as when you turn an amp way up high with no music. It's like one of the gains is up too high on the amp or something, and it's picking up the odd digital interference too. Any quick fix there, or do I have to poke around until I find the culprit? That's hiss with engine off. A bit ironic after me talking about the Pioneer having less background hiss because of the 100db S/N ratio

SNR of 75db is very noisy and seems like a supprising figure. Even the jaycar cheap stuff is over 85db.
I would look at Earthquake. Best soundinf 4 or 5 channel i have heard and great value. 4 Channel - $460 4 x 130rms @ 4ohm or 2 x 400rms bridged 5 Channel - $535 4 x 130rms + 1 x 400rms @4ohm (500rms @ 2ohm) or 3 x 400rms @ 4ohm bridged

This is the first time I've had a head-deck running off an amp. Is some audible hiss with no music (vol on 0) in a quiet interior of a car, something that just is, and is the nature of solid state amps?
Or should I expect no hiss at all with this setup? |
