Hey guys I'm interested in getting my subwoofers really soon.
I know I'm getting 2x 12' subs to go with my 6 1/2' front splits. I was looking at getting the polk d1222 Loaded enclosure setup for $550 AUD http://www.polkaudio.com/caraudio/db/index.php?s=db1222 But then someone told me about ported and sealed enclosures so I looked into it and I found for the $550 I can get 2 Rockford fosgate p2d2-12' subs in a sealed enclosure http://www.rockfordfosgate.com/products ... mid=120415 Now what I want to know is which of these sub brands is better or are they both good? My real problem is, Sealed or ported.... I've heard the polks in there ported enclosure before but I've never heard a sealed setup before and all the places I've been don't have any sealed setups. So the music I listen to is Metal Disturbed Rise against A day to remember ect Dubstep Skrillex Klaypex And well basically a whole range of music like Evermore Simple plan Coldplay Avenged Sevenfold ect So which type of enclosure would suit my needs best? Ok so far I've decided ported is best since apparently if it's done right it still sounds almost as good as Sealed. Just wondering What freqency response means? If you want clarity, I suggest a sealed enclosure. They are generally smaller and give better more accurate sound...goes well with any music really...might not have great low bass compared to a ported enclosure, but personally, a sealed is enough bass.
A ported enclosure is great if you want SPL...people will hear you before they see you...in some cases even feel the bass. Enclosures are generally larger and for a good set up, you'd need the port hole tuned for certain frequency range at which the sub is optimal at. You'll have great "boom" effect though.

So what sort of sounds is low bass exactly? do you think you could link to a song with low bass just so I know for certain what it is? Do you stil get a good boom effect from a sealed enclosure? I figure in a ported if the bass is so strong that people for ages feel it then it might not be very comfortable in my car especially since I've got a station wagon. |

Hey Mate,
going by the type of music you listen to, it seems that you listen to a wider variety than, say myself. In that case I would go sealed. I have had both ported and sealed, ported was louder but the sealed sounded better, and I can turn it up higher than before. There are a few reasons for this, as "phongus" sealed will offer you bass that is more pucnhy rather than a boom. Sure ported enclosers are louder but unless the box is perfect (box is usually huge, i.e. even if you have a station wagon it will minimise your boot space significantly) and the port must be perfect for the sub and for the frequency to which it is tuned. otherwise the bass can get quite distorted. If your worried about loudness, believe me your subs will sound loud, as both of the subs you are looking at are good. But unless you know what you are doing, go for the sealed, as even very very good subs can sound bad if they are not tuned properly. BTW, when you do eventually get them. Break the sub in first, as when they are brand new the coils are a bit stiff. you do this by keeping the bass low for a while (i.e. a few days) and slowly increasing the bass. |

Oh and another thing, Make sure you buy an amp that will suit the subs well.
what ever the RMS power of your subs are make sure you get an amp that has an RMS power slightly higher than your subs. not too much but a little, i.e 1.25 to 1.5 times your subs. |

Go with ported, you'll get tighter bass for the metal. If the bass is too low the double kick get's lost.
It's a trade off though, dub step sounds great when it's booming.

This is not correct. Sealed enclosure will hands down always give a tighter bass response than ported. Go the kickers. With a big amp. i have 2 cvrs ported tuned to 38Hz with a zx750.1 rated at 950wrms. Tuned and setup perfectly they pulled 136Db with a s**t battery. They also sound amazing with what i listen to: Metal (and all associated cores/thrash/speed etc) Dubstep (and all associated steps/wobbles) DnB Electro Rock Lots of Reggae Had them since 2007 in the same box and still hit as hard as ever. IF u get the box right it wont matter what u listen to it will still sound good, yes some better but most will still be good, ask the vic guys who were at AFD. i have 2 x 15" clarions in a ported box that with music puts out a 140db but still hits double bass of rock and metal.
it loves low notes tho, thats the show stopper. And you cant hear it if all the windows are up.

FIXED! hu? wat? u lost me lol 140db windows up = f**k up hearing lol well i cant be in the car at any comps now, 140db is the limit. but at normal volumes it still good, u feel the bass being 15's. also atm i have the 2 750rms subs getting 1000rms to Both not each and the gain is under 1/4 so theres more potential left in them.

Sound like theyre only just at half capacity. Gonna nees some monster batteries to pull 145+ with 2000wrms!

well i have a second Hertz monoblock waiting for 0gauge then ill put it in, maby a larger capacitor at the same time atm i only have a 1 farad.

Your gonna need a LOT more than a capacitor for that!
Current draw for my ~1000wrms is 120Amps. Assuming double, 2000wrms is ~250Amps. No capacitor is going to help you with that missing amperage! Get a yellowtop or two in the bastard!
