I am looking to get an 8" for the shelf and had some q's.
Do u need it boxed in any way?
Will it sound good without a box?
Do you need and amp to run it?
and
Any recommendations of subs?
atm it is going to be a Rockford Fosgate one.

You dont "need" to box it if u are putting it in the parce;l shelf, though it will sound 100% better if you do.

You will need an amp to run it.

if your budget will allow you are mutch better of getting a boxed 10" or 12" sub + AMP and put it in the boot. you can get an okay setup like this for about 300 bucks. (400 bucks if u include the wiring kit)

And you will probably have some issues with buzzing in the back shelf if u run any sort of power to it as well.

If you can source out an 8" free air sub (very hard) then get that...that way you don't need to make a box for it.

I have thought about putting an 8" boxed sub on the shelf myself so I came up with this idea. You can put the 8" sub into the parcel shelf hole and build a cylinder tube coming down from the hole onto the floor. depending on the size enclosure required you can make it bigger by having a bigger cylinder. I mean you can always use a rectangular shape for the box coming down and use the exisiting sub screw holes to hold the box down when the sub goes in.

just a theory.
