Well, just got the bad news from the air con people that my evaporator has s**t itself.
I just also got the even worse news that they want $850 ($940 for copper) to fix it. OR i can buy parts and get them to gas it but fit it myself for aorund $380 ($470 for copper) So, being a cheap uni student, i have chosen to do it myself!! Will do a copper one though. I realise i will have to take most of the dash out, do i need the crash pad (main bit) out? Is there much to it more than just undoing all the hoses going into it (i got no gas atm anyway, so i dont have to worry about dumping it) and lifting the old one out? Are there any more obstacles i will run into while trying to do it? Will order the parts this arvo and try and do it next weekend. Thanks |

Also, are there any docos on how to remove the dash? I had a quick look and couldnt find anything. i know how to get the cluster surround bit off. But the glovebox and crash pad is what i am interested in.
Or will i have to go by feel!!

One other thing, will it be of interest to anyone if i take pics and maybe write up a quick doco on how to change it over. Cause if i understand correctly, it can be a bit of a problem with the evaporators corroding away

so your heaterbox is stuffed ... nah mate it isn't hard to pull it out. It is a big job but not hard. Plan it and do it yourself!!! save yourself heaps of money. Plenty of peopl eon here to help you along... get a replacement box ready to go, rather than trying to repair your old one.

the guys from the air con place have ordered all the parts i will be needing, they should be here ealry next week, and next weekend i will get into it.
He he, i am all excited with a reason to work on the car again!!

Its inside the heater box, which is glued (silastic) and screwed together. I broke one trying to get it apart, its a major PIA.

If you are just replacing the evaporator, you should also consider doing the heater core whilst you are at it. They corrode over time and will cause a drama when leaking into your cabin. I can't remember price but it beats pulling your dash out again in 12 months to do essentially the same job again.
Don't worry about breaking your heater box......take all the screws out of the back and then gently prise the back cover away from the main body of the box with a small screw driver or something. Take your time, make sure all the screws are out and it will come away easily enough. It is definatley not hard or technical as Happy said, but once you have finished this job, you will not want to do it again for a long time!!!!! Good luck!

ive done it twice and i'd be happy to pay an extra $400-$500 for some one else to do it!
1 C*** of a job 2 you dont get any kind of warenty on workmanship doing yourself.

Oh well... io have stuck with doing it myself.
Picked up the parts yesterday, will start work on friday. As for the heater core, the air con guys just suggested to take it down to a radiator shop and get them to pressure test it and make sure that the heater core is still good. And i just realised, isnt the heater core connected to my radiator? i am assuming its the bit that the radiator coolant flows through to heat the air. Does that mean to get it taken off that i will need the get all my coolant flushed? 
Hope not, only had it done 2000 kms ago!! Do i NEED to take out the heater core to change the evaporator? Thanks |

yes you need to take out the heater core to change the evaporator, the whole heater box assembly needs to come out.
if your going to do it yourself make sure you take note where everything goes dont rush probly even take photos, and get your hands on a workshop manual. good luck.

Picked up an ellorys manual today, and i learnt the hard way on the go kart a few years back when dad stripped and i rebuilt the kart, that you really do have to know how everything fitted together!!
Never seen so many bolts left over from one job!! ha ha |

One more question, flicking through the ellerys, it says you have to disconnect the steering shaft!! Is that right?
Hints and tips!! Please!! Start work on it tommorow morning |

with the steering shaft just move your seat back and remove the 2 bolts undernieth 12 or 13mm i think holding the colum up and drop it to the ground, i think you can get away without removing the plastic shroud around the steering colum. this should give you enough room
