iv painted my interior plastics many many times with so many diffrent methods all come out the same
it chips off with a light touch with your finger nail iv tried using primer vynle paint, enamel paint, metal paint, noraml, paint u get the idea iv wasted 200bucks on paint and clear coats any ideas on what doesnt chip off? btw its a el xr6

Have you had a look at my interior? I've sprayed the dash and door handle surrounds and I've had no issues for a few months now. I only used that supercheap stuff with no primer, just 3-5 clear coats on top of 3-4 colour coats, with adequate time to dry in between. Took a few days to do the lot.

where can i find your interior its not in your photos?
yer done my whole car from roof linning to taking out the whole dash and doing all that so iv already gone to the trouble of doing it all what was the clear coat called? u dnt have to get back to me now but some time would be good

I have found the VHT vinyl dye to be very good, doesn't chip or rub off, and is very flexible. But you have to prepare the surface right first, eg: clean with water and detergent, then use a grease and wax remover just before painting.
I have a spare console lid I did with it to test, and have been trying to destroy the finish for a couple of months now, it gets scrubbed with rags, I have used window cleaner and quick detailer on it, chucked on the shed floor, gets tools thrown on it, still looks like new. |

for plastics, you should only acrylic paint, its a flexible paint and is made to plastic, give the surface a good sand (1200 grit), spray it thin, and then 2 light coats of clear then 1 more abit heaver and it should be fine. if it still flakes off then it must have an oily coat on the surface, a rub down with metho befor spraying will fix that.

I thought I had some up, maybe not then lol.
I'll see if I can get some tomorrow for ya The clear coat I used was also just supercheap brand stuff. madeaspak and I had a convo about his interior (ef/el with psi xr plates, now written off) a fair while back. I asked how he did his as it looked fukin sex so I did the same with mine, pretty sure he had his for fukn ages with no issues either. I did use the VHT plastic paint with primer on the airbag cover though, but everything else is hard plastic so its un necessary. |

paulos wrote: i cant sand the plastic back because it has a texture other than that cheers guys for the textured areas get some steel wool and hit it light with that then scrub it with wax and grease remover (or metho for the cheaper option) befor painting. the texture is a b**ch for holding the oils in the grooves. if theres a little bit in there that will be enough for the paint to flake. preparation is everything when it come to painting |

Ive painted the centre stereo/cluster surround with automotive paint i had made up for me in a spray can.
 To start, the plastic dash piece was wiped & scrubbed with Wax'n'Grease remover..... about 10 times over  Then used a good quality plastic primer, then sprayed the colour. Has held up fine although i try not to test it. The next step is to spray the surrounding grey vinyl with the same colour, and my local panel beater says the same plastic primer i used before will be enough to bond the colour to the vinyl, but im just not too sure as i dont wanna f**k it all up and have it peel off on me !!! a google search for painting vinyl (without using vinyl sprays) ive found some people say just wipe down & use a plastic primer, others say to sand the shiny coating from the vinyl first? |

VHT vinyl dye is def the go over other brands as said above.. I have sprayed a few center console lids before with cheaper brands and they become rubbed and polished after a short while from my arm wresting on it all day. The VHT stuff looks like I sprayed it yesterday even though it was 6 months ago. Still its no go for hard surfaces..

Yeah, good for vinyl and leather, plastic it will scrape off too easy.
