I haven't heard of it been done in N/A applications. Try give a few performance shops a call and see what they can offer

People have put adjustable gears on stock cams, there's some room for improvement, but I guess if you're going to that much effort, may as well swap the cams too.

I know of a GT with a set of comp cams in it. I believe it made excellent gains and even bottom end torque was improved. Sounded wicked too. Unfortunately all I was given for the camshaft specs was "stage 2" which is of course MEANINGLESS DRIVEL! I suspect the XE266BH may be the part used. I think a rebuild with some GT pistons may be in order to properly use that cam in an XR engine. It sure will stack up to buy four cams and the required springs and retainers though. I'd probably go for the XE262AH if you stay with 9.5:1 comp. You will need to reflash the thing because(apart from the need to recal for the cams) any cam other than stock will cause havoc with the speed density system. Considerable idle calibration work is required and time is money. I'd do all the other usual bolt ons before you go down this track and go from there. |

I haven't seen much gains in cam timing adjustment. I would say 2.5-3k is more like the price for cams.

yeah 2-3k for the shafts but they dont fit themselves so thats why i said 5.. but 5 grand for cams installed still only give me around the 270-280kw at the wheels.. alot of money for stuff all power i think.. |

Actually I reckon 2-3k installed. and where did you get this 270-280kw from?

Sounds like a bit of a backyard job for 2-3k. Cams, springs and retainers will prob cost you around $2000, new gaskets are about $600, then you have to check and see if anything else needs replacing. Labour is a killer, that will easily be around $1500 for them spending a day stripping your engine down, rebuilding the heads then putting it all back together. Then on top of that you'll have about half a day to a day tuning it. Not really worth it unless you're doing a full engine rebuild.
270-280rwkw for just a cam swap sounds about right, you may get a lil more but who knows. With higher compression and some head work you'll be around 310+rwkw. Last edited by punktured on Wed Nov 26, 2008 4:43 pm, edited 1 time in total. |

deffernantly sounds like a back yard job.. and 270-280 is around what other people have pulled with the same work as i have.. so to me sounds about right.. but they give you a s**t load more torque as far as im told |

Haha nothing wrong with a back yard workshop, that's the only way I'd do a job like this. No way I'm paying thousands of dollars in labour. And I wouldn't be suprised that you'll do better work than most shops.

yeah backyards r good.. but not when ya know f**k all about cars. haha
i been talking to herrod about the cam shaft adjusters they say they dont give much power.. but the power starts alot lower so not starting at 3200rpm starts 1500-2000rpm.. sounds good to me:) 60ft time coming down |

If you want power that low you should have just bought a 3v
![]() How much would that set you back? |
