been looking through the pacemaker catalogue and i've noticed they claim
{USERNAME} wrote: Note: Will not fit with GT40 Heads as fitted to 302W AU II
due to Spark Plug angle. http://www.pacemaker.com.au/ford_falcon_v8_eb-au.html does this mean the EB GT's and ED XR8 Sprints with the GT40 heads need the PH4001's? or are the PH4001's AU specific?

the ph4000 are fine, i got them on my EL with the gt40p's and they fit fine, a bit tight maybe. i just got my mechanic to fit 90degree plug boots and its sweet now. only drama is i think u mite need to take the extractors off to fit sparkplugs maybe?

Nope the Sprint/GT heads are the earlier GT40 type NOT GT40P as used on AU/Explorer. They have the same spark plug angle as std E7 heads.

No worries there either...same angle as E7's. 40p's are the only heads to have a different plug location/angle.

what are the GT40P's like compared to the X's?

The plugs stick out at almost 90 degrees on 40p's. Whereas all other heads are about 45 degrees.

GT40's flow 192/128cfm
GT40P's flow 196/139cfm GT40Y's 213/134cfm GT40X's 226/161 Ford Motorsport Z's flow 277/218cfm. E7's flow 156/116cfm had that written down somewhere, the Y's, X's, Z's are alloy and the others are cast iron. |

They all have good potential for performance and offyaguts' info showing the peak flows from each head gives you some insight. But, it depends what "performance" you want? If it's good all round performance you want up to 6000rpm and you haven't got any heads yet, you can't go past the 40X simply because 40's, 40p's and to a lesser extent 40Y's need to have money spent on porting, valves etc, to get them up to the level that 40X's are already at. If you want all out performance or you have a stroker go the Z304's but this will mean different intake, cam and headers to take full advantage of them. With your Sprint and assuming you want good all round performance without changing anything else on the engine I would go straight for the 40X with the small 58cc chamber(X305). It'll be a straight bolt on proposition too.... http://www.fordracingparts.com/download ... 9-X303.pdf Pete. |

the intention is to build an externally stock appearing engine with stroker internals, sprint intake will most likely be extrude-honed and port matched to the heads, and i'm not worried about getting the heads ported for a bit more flow if needed
what i'd like to achieve from the finished engine is not a dragstrip killer, but a reasonably well mannered street engine with enough power&torue to be respectable on the track at weekends...... (read: hillblimbs, track days, etc up against modified XY/XA/XB GT's)

Ok, well there are probably other heads like AFR 185's for instance that will be better but the 40X's can certainly be ported to be much better.
I suppose you want heads that have the core plug at the front so they look stock although that's pretty well covered by the bracketry on late models so it's not really an issue. TFS high ports have the front core plug and they are an extremely good head and I think you can get away with headers on them ok in terms of clearance although you really need 1 3/4" primaries with these. Pete. |
