question for everyone, in regards to a factory EB 5.0 would the note of an exhaust be very different if you did or didnt have a set of extractors? the reason i ask is because although the standard manifolds are restrictive they are still a 4 into 1 arangement so they should have the individual pulses rather than 1 blended sound like the old log manifolds? thoughts?...

Extractors are just the start....you will notice a difference in note which will vary between makes, but the overall note will depend on the rest of your system as well. The 5.0L system on the E-series is very restrictive right through.
As a minimum you should go with a decent set of extractors and a high flow muffler, whether you keep the resonator will depend on what you choose to install, you could end up with droning without the resonator. Because I wanted a different note to the normal V8 sound, I end up getting a full custom system. But get an idea about the kind of note you are chasing and then go talk to a few zorst shops. Cheers, Mick

my ef i had a catback put on with std manifolds and cats, sound obviously changed. then a few weeks later when i put hurricane extractors and hi flow cats, and the sound beefed up so much. the change was so much better whith the extractors it was like changing the full system again.
with just the catback (twin 2.5 1 muffler each side) it had ok sounds but very smooth, that was with the std manifold. once the extracotrs were on the sound changed, a lot deeper and rumbled like a v8 should. so yeah in my case extractors made a world of diff to the note. Al |

I used to have a NF S2 Fairlane Ghia 5L i fitted a twin 2.5inch exhaust exhaust all the way to the rear of the car and it sounded good and also went great. Then a couple of weeks later fitted a set of pacemaker extractors and twin VN holden cat's and boy did it sound tough and go even better after that.
The standard headers are very restrictive as are the standard heads. But as many have mentioned before a good set of free flowing extractor's (i would suggest a pacemaker brand) larger flow cat's, (i went with the holden style because they are flanged each side and do flow very well compared with the standard ford ones and they are also very easy to get from an exhaust shop or wrecker.) I went with a twin 2.5 inch system (is alittle over kill but the twin 2.5inch system did me well),i had twin straight through double offset and was dumped before the diff with the fake tail pipe.(But i also had it flanged so if i ever wanted to put the tailpipe on it was easy as unbolt and rebolt lol.) The exhaust is just a start, once that is out of the way i would suggest set of underdrive pulleys, explorer intake manifold, cold air intake from the AU XR8 or TS50,TS50 air flow meter (Bigger than standard 5L),larger throttle body, run premium fuel, advance your timing, get a set of GT40 heads, obviously if you are going to change the heads i would upgrade the camshaft to something with a higher lift and also roller rockers, then upgrade the standard stall converter maybe a 2000rpm to 3000rpm stall to suit cam choice and also change the diff gears to a happier 3.7 or 3.9. Yeah so theres plenty to go after the exhaust if your are after performance.

ah ok. thanks guys. i was planning on getting a twin system (no x pipe) with 2.5 pipes and one hooker or redback muffler on each side.
i was wondering for ound only if it was worth getting the extractors but it definately sounds like they are.. the next question is then... what are good combos for mufflers. would a twi 25 to the rear with hookers or redbacks sound good? also does anyone have a set of extractors lying around that they would like to sell? ![]() |

Stock sounds like a vacuum cleaner. Extractors give you that burble sound.

That is a nice one lmfao a vacuum cleaner. Doesnt really mattter what brand mufflers,if you want good sound and flow i would suggest the straight through S bend mufflers i wouldnt bother with any in the tailpipe. But if it drones too much for you then slip some hotdogs in there. When i had mine dumped i could cruize at 100kph or 110kph and have the stereo on and it was quiet pleasurable lol.

are these good performers? will they give a good note compared to the standard manifolds or try-ys? thoughts....? cheers guys |

If it's mandrel bent rather than press bent (ala factory headers), you will have better flow and more power.
Extractors arent much good if you keep the rest of the exhaust system stock though. This'd just creat a bottleneck effect. If you get the shorties and a full exhaust system as well, it will sound better and perform a lot better. Simple
