From what i'm gathering, did you short out the battery with your spanner? If so, not good for battery lastability. if it stops starting again, give the starter motor a few whacks with a little hammer to unsettle some of the carbon buildup.

I doubt that as the starter relay is just a signal wire, and its getting a signal. As smiley235 says it sounds like carbon build up in between the segments so not allowing a field of current, the current is just tracking so basically acting like a dead short (no north south polarity). A couple of taps (if you can get to it) can free some of it up and get you out of trouble (get it started) but it will just happen again. The s/motor needs to be rebuilt and cleaned up, change the brushes etc. A broken hacksaw blade is good to clean the segments up with, the grease in the bushes is more than likely fooked as well and has gone all sticky, that wouldn't be helping your cause, grease the Bendix drive, change the brushes paint it black and bingo! rebuilt s/motor. Cost you f/a too ![]()

Make sure that signal wire has a good connection on starter pre engage solenoid ...
Check relay over near battery...

How im in the same position as you and my car decided not to start 15 mins before a christening. What timimng! Lucky NRMA was quick to come past and started it. -Just made it for the last ten minutes.
Now i have a extra long screw driver with me incase it stops again to tap the starter motor.

Starter motors, bellhousings, auto boxes.... They're all different - which is another reason why I'm glad I've got a six.
Poor mate down in Dunedin is trying to put a 5 speed in his V8 ED Lane or something and is costing so much more than mine it's not funny at all. $260 for a bloody clutch fork! HELL - I have three of them here and I've only paid about $100 for almost everything I need to do a whole conversion, other than the gearbox.... |

i think ull find the actuall gearboxes are the same
jsut the shafts are different length which isnt much to get changed and the bellhousing is different ![]()

Out of curiosity - doesn't the Commodores use the same length input shafts? I ask as there's a guy down Dunedin who has his NC Lane sitting around doing nothing and he wants to drive it, but he's been quoted $1000 for a tranny to put in it whilst his 5 speed sorts itself out... He's part hunting.... I've probably got a 6 cylinder auto I could ship down to him for less than a third of that, but then he'd need to sort the input shaft on it...... Ho hum, will write him an email as don't think he looks in here as often as me..... |

Gearboxes are different. Autos and manuals.
You could take out your starter motor by removing the LH engine pipe from the bodgy factory manifold to the Y pipe and then undo the starter. Easy peasy job. Pull your starter apart and check the brushes and the little bronze race at either end of the motor. I cleaned and lubed mine up and put new brushes in it. Actually, they are a really good starter motor as they have gear reduction in them. Bad luck about your arm too mate. Not much fun getting under a car and it falls. Don't rely on a jack alone, you're lucky your scone didn't get squashed!! |
