Its your Battery bro! Battery's don't like the cold too much, and unless there in real good condition the cold kills them super quick. Have you had a couple of cold nights recently up the mountains?
To put it simply your running low in your cold cranking amps. Even if you check the batt in the morning she will still show 11.6 but as soon as you go to crank it BAng straight down to 9/10v = not enough. You can check your water levels in your batt and if the low FILL WITH DISTILLED WATER ONLY and then pray for warmer weather, or just go grab a newbie. The reason she starts ok once the engine is warm is that the heat from the engine has transfer into the battery (insert technical dribble here) and picked up your CCA. There is also a bush mechanics trick, that if you get a flat battery and have no other means to start the car, make a small fire then put the battery on the warm coals then after she gets pretty warm (like just able to touch) quickly throw her in the car and bingo!!! instant jump start!!! so to speak. I don't buy anything less than a 11 plater, there more expensive than a 9 but worth it. Especially if you have your car radio on for long periods with the engine off and s**t like that.

Oh yeah and the reason its clicking is you have enough power to engage the starter solenoid but not enough to crank the motor. Ibet it goes
vrrrm click vrrrmm click, then goes clickclickclickclickclick. Id also say that your starter motor isn't in the best condition either and is taking allot of current to crank over. the brushes are probably fooked. But if your running on a tight budget id deff say just grab the battery, or alternatively pull one (if its in good nick) out of one of your other cars and see how that goes tomorrow morning!

i would say check the cable going to the starter motor is nice and tight first..
otherwise look at trying a new or a known good battery. or try another starter motor? |

just to follow up on this, with ignition off, and a multimeter on the battery 100% charge... 12.65+ volts 75% charge..... 12.45 volts 50% charge..... 12.25 volts anything under 11.90 volts probably wont be enough to start the car. Pull the battery out and fully charge it, and see if it even takes 100% charge, then you can rule it out, or the charging system |

My 3 month old bosch 13 plater in the turbo car drops too 11.8v (according to my turbo timer which has volts) and just sits there for weeks. Still starts the car every time, and the battery's in the boot.

Ahh another item to the list of why 6's are the best
![]() Yeah sounds like it could be the starter then. Check your leads though, you could have corrosion or a loose contact. And get under and check the connections on the starter motor too. You might be lucky?

Check the earth and power leads on your battery and starter motor/block and make sure that they are clean, nice and tight. Simple things first.
My ED was impeccable until we went to Woolies one night and it was snowing heavily and cold. When I tried to start the wagon, it just clicked although it was a new battery and I had a good alternator. Not much fun getting under a Falcon at night in the snow, but found out it was a loose connection. Fordmods to the rescue!! |
