I think you confused what I described as sensor #1. This is the small single blade terminal sensor in front of injector 5. This is for my cluster.

The ACT sensor is the same size as the ECT and it sits in runner 5 between injectors 5 and 6(front 2 on the passenger side of motor) in my photo. It has an effect on fuel economy in terms of richness of fuel when the motor is cold. You should be able to test it using a multimeter and a variable temp heat gun/heater fan.

Ok, crystal clear now.

ECT sensor screws/plugs into coolant line on driver side above lower intake manifold.

ACT sensor screws/plugs into lower manifold between injectors 5 & 6 on passenger side.

Cluster sensor is in front of injector 5, lower intake passenger side, right at the front.

Cluster sensor should not affect fuel econoumy surely?

ECT will be changed to a new one tonight.
ACT coming out for a clean and check tonight.

Next thing is, I'm shortly going for the Explorer manfiold setup to replacing the existing HO.

Will the ACT sensor still be needed?
Will it plug/screw into the same area?
Will it be a different sensor etc?

Thanks.

Yours will not have a cluster sensor. On cars that do(EA-ED) it is only for the temp gauge so it CANNOT have any effect on fueling.
Exporer(AU) lower does not have an ACT sensor. The AU uses a sensor in the lnlet elbow.
Yes the ACT sensor does affect fueling.
You can actually use the ACT sensor you have now and fit it to the inlet tube or you can use an AU type which is designed to plug into the AU inlet tube.
You can check these while in situ with a multimeter...no need to remove.

TEMP SENSOR #3(FOR EB-ED): This sensor is situated on the same black pipe as sensor #2, directly where the pipe plumbs into the lower inlet manifold and has a yellow squarish plug. This is for the older climate control used on the EB-ED V8s.

Is the ACT is on the DRIVER side or PASSENGER side?

I'm confused. You have a EL2 XR8. This means you already have an explorer manifold in which case means that you already have the ACT sensor in runner #5.

Sorry, edit that, I meant AU top end, as in injectors, t/b, maf, heads, etc.

XR9UTE said the Explorer didn't have the ACT sensor in runner 5?
Yet tonight I pulled off an ACT sensor between injectors 5 and 6 on the lower manifold, passenger side?
Part no. F2DF-12A697-AA

Badly worn, with the middle pin bent to one side.

No , Pete said that the Explorers(AU) dont have the ACT sensor in the lower manifold, which is correct, they have them in the inlet piping elbow.
However the ELII and XHII XR8's that got the explorer still had the allowance for ACT in the lower manifold.
I think you get yourself more confused than you need to at times ;)

Jeff

It's not badly worn....they all look like that.
That little bulb at the end is a NTC(Negative Temperature Coefficient) thermistor. This means it has less resitance when warm that it does when cold. The ECT sensor is actually exactly the same but it is covered by the brass housing. It's just that you can't use that type when measuring air temp because it's response time will be too slow.

so you think a new ECT & ACT wouldn't improve fuel economy?

Only if they're faulty. Get a workshop manual....it'll tell you how check them and do a self test which will inform you if any sensors are out of range.

Yes but that picture doesn't show the real condition of the senor, if your spark plugs looked like that you would change them right away.
I replaced it with a new one, little under $50.

ATM economy is at 13.5 which is great, spent a bit of time around town as well and it satyed right there, so its a good sign.

Test will be during the week when I'm doing the short drive to work where the temp barely gets to normal, that's when I've found the consumption shoots up towards 20.

Looking good so far as I'm on track for about 500km, usually only get 350km per tank.

If you're only going short distances to work, make sure you have a stock thermostat(192F). It could be that someone has fitted a cold one in the past...not good for engine life or fuel economy.
Give that new ACt sensor a month and it'll look just like the old one....that's what carbon and fuel staining does to them.

Yes, I recently put a stock therostat in there.
What makes the "pin" on the ACT sensor warp so much?
