Did you remove the electronics from the MAF housing and clean the hot wires or just sprayed inside the MAF housing?

I took the MAF off completely, but I didn't spray the plug or terminal, should I have? behind some mesh in the MAF was what looked to me a 'hot wire', I gave that a squirt but couldn't clean it with any cloth because I couldn't get behind the mesh. |

Nah mate you gotta remove the electronics from the aluminium housing, To get it off take out the two Tamperproof (star type) screws out and carefully lift the sensor out of the housing. When you have sensor only in your hand you will clearly, quite obvioulsy see the two hot wires. These are the things that need to be cleaned but DO NOT touch them with any cloth or anything. I reccomend a can of electrical contact cleaner (or anything that wont leave an oily type film on there), i used white spirits in a shot glass and let it soak for a while then sorta stirred it around ( i didnt have contact cleaner at the time). Once you feel like they are clean enough re-assemble the sensor to the housing, make sure it seals good aswell. Then refit complete MAF back into air intake.
Try that and see how you, i had this problem a while ago and this method fixed it perfectly. just remember at all times, DO NOT touch or let anything touch or bump the hotwires apart from the cleaning agent. Hope this helps, Cheers Jeff

By star type, do you mean phillips head, or those stupid 'special' ones? Stupid special ones mate, called tamperproof. Same as a torx bit but with a pin sorta thing in the middle.

Pulled the hot wires out, gave em a soak and a spray with WD-40, the higher up wire looks to be stuffed, the coil is all dark and has a bit hanging off it.
I'll chase one up on my days off next week. Thanks for your help so far XH5LWEPN, lets hope this one fixes it  :D:D

The taller hotwire doesnt sound good by the way you described it, can you put up a decent close up pic of it? No worries mate, anytime.

I won't try and get a pic up, it's almost hopeless lol
I'm fairly certain it isn't doing what it should be doing with the coil being stuffed, I'll drop a new one in (preferably a slightly larger one) and see how i go. |

Alright, if ya pretty certain its buggered, and it definately sounds it, then buying another used one would definately be the go. You should be able to pick up another EL std 55mm one for about $100max with sensor. When ya get it, pull it apart again and clean the hot wires just to be 100% sure, put it all back together and swap it with yours and ditch yours straight in the bin.
I wouldn't suggest changing the housing to a larger one untill your ready for a tune. Some people have done it with no dramas and others have encountered leaning out problems which you really dont want. Basically just get it runnin with a std one for now to solve the problem and then upgrade housing size later.

PS: Yesterday it was put on the dyno as is, everyday trim/setup with the stuffed MAF and managed to produce 121.3rwkw's.
It's a starting point I suppose. |

I'm living off your words at the moment mate, your choice The 70-75mm AU ones are the most popular ones people have been using. Pretty sure you wont find a 60mm one, someone correct me if im wrong. Std eb-el ones are 55mm, and the AU ones are 70-75mm, and there are some aftermarket ones from the states that i've seen from bout 80-90mm. The au 70mm one will be perfect, add to it with a 65mm t/b, hi-flow filter and a tickford/xr6T snorkle and a custom tune and that will have the intake side of things sorted all the upto the manifold, from there you start looking at more $$$$ but looking at bigger gains. It's a starting point I suppose. I think when the MAF issue is all sorted you'll be looking at about 130rwkw. with a nice tune maybe 140 would be feasable.

if your still looking for a new maf there was one on ebay for $100. this is the larger au housing but it has the plug to suit the el on it so it will plug straight in

Ok, MAF is in
Paid too much, but I didn't have time to chase up a cheaper one 
$150 for housing and sensor. Sensor is immac, housing was filthy. cleaned them both and it seems to me the problem is all gone :D:D
Now I know how slow my car is, haha. It actually goes quite a bit harder. But now I'm saving every dollar I earn so I can get an AU XR8 motor (pref series 3) or keep saving and go a 347 stroker. |
