Another episode to the saga to add to the pissedness. I cleaned them all up and gapped them to 1.1mm and what a difference it's made, especially at idle. My problem of power loss is gone and it feels to be running smoother all round. I've only driven it around the block a couple of times, so will get a better idea as to the difference it's made after a day or 2s driving. Hopefully it'll be all good for Monday night. ![]() ![]() ![]()

2 to 2.5?? What the??
Was the apprentice doing an experiment or something!!! Unreal!!! Good find scaffy, hope its all good. Be sure to update tomorrow after she goes for a nice spin...... Looks like loss of power up high being caused by spark blow out from those rediculous plug gaps.

An interesting experiment it was. It's almost like an easter egg hunt. I won't go into it though. In a couple of weeks I'm going to be getting the whole lot pulled down and make sure the cam is dialled in properly. Everything will be photographed and logged properly and if it's not right, it'll get fixed and someone else will be paying the bill. I'm really hoping it is right when it comes down to the cam, but I'm at a stage where I feel I'd be stupid not to get it checked after everything else.
On a positive note, we went down to a friends place in Success lastnight and it got a good run in the cool air. It felt very smooth and there were a lot of cars heading down that way in a hurry. I gave it a couple of squirts and it felt really smooth and pulled pretty hard. At first it was feeling like it could be a bit slower for some reason but I think it's just the smoothness making me feel that way. I'll find out tomorrow night anyway. One question I have now is this. When you upgrade your ignition system are you able to or should you open the gap up any more? Or is the optimum gap size for a plug set and the ignition system just creates a more powerful spark without altering spark gap?

Any help with the above Qs would be muchly appreciated.
I'm using NGK FR5-1 plugs which are recommended by Trick Flow for these heads. I was looking online today and found a couple of forums, mainly Dodge ones, referring to these plugs and they all said these plugs should be gapped to .040 which is 1mm. I gapped them to 1.1mm. Will this make any difference worth worrying about?

Leave them at 1.1mm and drive the car for a couple of days or a day. Pull the plugs and examine them. If the plugs are fouling try a smaller gap if they are okay try another .1mm and throw them back in. Drive again then pull them all and examine. If they are still okay try another .1mm, keep doing so untill you get to a gap where they start showing signs of fowling etc then go back to the last gap that showed optimum fuel burn.

Excuse my ignorance, I know what you mean by fouling, but if the plug isn't fouling should there be absolutely no carbon build up or blackening of the plug? Or is there an acceptable amount of blackening on a properly gapped plug?

Without struggling to explain in writing a quick google found this, http://www.spark-plugs.co.uk/pages/tech ... gnosis.htm

Yea thats more with leaded fuel..
Opening the gap might be o/k at low rpm but at upper rpm and load the spark my break down.. Or the cylinder flow will blow spark out.. More so on forced induction engines . But it does happen on good n/a motors too... With Dis4 ignition box I know some who have run up to .060 ... Personally I'd keep fairly close to manu specs... BTW I have wasted spark on my car and above 10 Lb the plug gap needs to be under .022 or spark blows out... Fouling of plug is more to do with heat range of plug...

That's gold, cheers. I'll check them in the carpark after work tomorrow before the drags. I may even try and get my hands on a new set as I should have a little time up my sleeve.

All of which will be noticeable on removal of plugs....

Another thing I've been wondering. Trick Flow recommend the NGK FR5 plug, whilst what's in my car is FR5-1. In MALZ yesterday they were looking for the FR5 but there was nothing in their catalogue except for the FR5-1. I've seen the straight FR5 on international sites though. Does the -1 refer to it as being a colder plug as has been suggested to me or is it a reference for gap size?

I thought the 5 represents the heat range, but i may be incorrect. The -1 could refer to sealing washer or tapered or the plug gap as you said.
